AIBU to worry my STI tests were too early and missed something?

not sure if this is allowed but I have done a name change as I am posting for my friend who doesn’t want to make an account in case her partner finds out - feel free to remove thread if this isn’t allowed and I’ve broken any MN rules!

AIBU to worry about STI?

I slept with someone i was seeing end of October last year and unfortunately the condom split.
I carried out an NHS home testing kit 2 weeks later in panic mode and then repeated it 4 weeks later (so 6 weeks after intercourse)

I thought this was enough time but have since read that I should have tested at 12 weeks for syphillis.
I am now concerned I have something without knowing. I have ordered another test to put my mind at rest but am I being unreasonable to panic over this?

I feel even worse as I have since met a partner and as I had tested already and he did too we had decided recently to take the plunge and stop using condoms (I am on birth control). I hadn’t slept with anyone else following the testing before meeting my partner so didn’t feel it was necessary to repeat it. Now I’m panicking that if the test was too early and missed something all them months ago, that I may have passed it on.

No one on here is going to know if you have an STI?

Thefrozenone · 21/07/2026 19:39

It’s more whether to panic I believe. The girls have tried to reassure that it’s all ok but this doesn’t seem to have done the trick.

It's very unlikely, unless this person in October has specifically told you they have syphilis.
Do a test to put your mind at rest and protect your current partner, but try not to worry too much.

Who are The girls? Has she discussed this with her children??

Thefrozenone · 21/07/2026 19:50

@AnonymityAnonymity sorry lol of course not - the girls as in us as her friends - hence the post as we haven’t managed to reassure .

Are you getting symptoms? Can you do another test?

Thefrozenone · 21/07/2026 19:54

@Minasama - no symptoms I believe it’s a panic over the realisation that the test could have been too early. Another test has been ordered.

I'd be more wary of getting pregnant with someone you've known 6 months.

Yes HIV & syphilis test needs done 12 weeks after unprotected intercourse. You local NHS GUM clinic can do this free of charge if you’re in the UK.
