AIBU to want a refund after faulty Bac Market refurbished iPhone?

Purchased a phone through Bac Market, paid £500. 6 months later phone stopped working. Apple said it is the logic board, phone needs replacement and data is lost. It is DD15 phone; she is upset as lost all her photos and videos. It is an iPhone 13 pro max.

Questions: How can she recover her data? She doesn’t think she was backing up.

How do we claim money back from Bac Market? They said they can repair it or replace it if they can’t repair but after this experience we don’t want another old phone.

What version of the iPhone is more reliable for a new phone that doesn’t cost the earth?

They will fix it or replace it; but after this we just don’t trust them and don’t want another faulty phone. So disappointing

My daughter and her friends have bought multiple things from Back Market (assuming it’s a typo) and no issues. After 6 months it’s probably just one of those things.

it could well be backed up - I am not sure I have ever actually had to set mine to do it - it just happens in the background.

I'm not that up on consumer rights but I suspect you are out of time for a refund, fix or replace is a reasonable outcome. I suspect you just got unlucky, it can happen with old second hand tech maybe accept the replacement.

Apple has said the data is lost. If she wasn't backing it up, there's nothing left to recover.

Given you've had the phone for 6 months before this happened, it's unlikely you can. It's not like it broke after 6 days.

If the repair or replacement is what's in your warranty, that's what you'll get.

If she didn't have back up enabled, everything is lost. usually Iphones back up automatically to Icloud, when they're plugged in and connected to wifi overnight. If it is backed up, all she needs is her apple id and password, to restore everything to another Iphone, You've been unlucky, any phone can fail at any time, I used a refurbished iphone 5 for several years, until I dropped it, edge on to concrete, my current one is a 2020SE second hand from music magpie, 4 years later it's still ok, but could do with a new battery.

If she logs onto Icloud using her ID, on another apple device she should see it there is a backup and when it was made.

Will check the apple ID; maybe it is backing up automatic; but not sure she has password

Even if you had bought a brand new iPhone directly from Apple, all they would do after 6 months is repair or replace with a reconditioned phone.

We are going to try that but she doesn’t remember her password 😅
