To feel burnt out as a single mum and move house

Sorry it’s long.

Single mum to two kids, 12 and 17. Widowed 9 years ago so everything has fallen to me. We were young so didn’t think of life insurance and we rented so I had nothing and had 2 kids to support so have had to work my socks off and it’s felt relentless. Had a 3 year relationship which I ended a year ago as he wanted to move in (and with his kids p/t) and I always said I wasn’t going to blend til all kids had moved out.

I feel exhausted. I want to cry all the time. I work almost full time self employed. Life is quite good, nothing specific to cry about, but I feel ground down. Work is getting harder and I’m not motivated by it. My home which I rent is too much work. It’s a period property and never feels done. There’s always a job to do and it feels like constant hard work, but it’s given me and my kids stability for 6 years and great location. A cleaner wouldn’t help and tbh I can’t justify the cost as I can stay on top of that, it’s things like then gardens, the hedges, a leak, things not working (which the landlord sorts, but being an older house it happens more frequently).

Eldest is going to university in Oct. WIBU to think about moving? Somewhere smaller and newer but still enough space for when eldest comes home in holidays. I worry about instability of renting and all the upheaval of that. genuinely think that the house is also making me feel burnt out because I can never relax here, but also worry if I’m just placing my feelings on to my home and really the problem is inside me and because of my work worries.

Any thoughts to help me think about how to feel like my life is in order and feel more content, please. Feel like I don’t trust my own decisions at the moment.

Come back and tell us what you decide good luck!

I’ve already made some decisions thanks to all of you.

I’m conscious of eldest going to uni and not feeling like their home has gone too, so I’m going to stay here for as long as I feel able, but keep an eye on rentals that are coming up. If something that is too good to miss comes up, I’ll go for it, but I won’t pursue something that’s just ok for the sake of moving. Also going to look at that affordable rent scheme in my area.

I’ve contacted the landlord and asked if they can deal with the hedges and lawn in the back garden if I deal with the front. Landlord said yes! The front is all pots so I’ve decided to get rid of them. It’ll look stark but I really don’t care as it’s a weight of my mind! So that’s gardens sorted.

With the house I’m only going to focus on the 3 rooms that we use and close the door on the others (remember I said it’s quite a big house but with lots of small rooms) and work on making these rooms nicer to be in.

I’ve meal prepped for the whole summer and let the kids know that if they want any variations, that’s fine but it needs a recipe and shopping list done by them in good time, so that I don’t have to think about it. I’ve put the food items into Ocado so that I just need to checkout each week rather than keep thinking of ideas.

Going to get my bloods checked too as I feel tired a lot and want to check that it’s ‘just’ life exhaustion or whether I need to supplement more.

I’m going to spend time on my career and what I need to do to make work better.

I can’t thank you all enough

Wow OP, what an update. You are incredible. Best wishes.

Onetimequestion · 22/07/2026 13:55

The meal prep I left to ChatGPT adding in my kids likes so that only took minutes, adding to Ocado was 20 minutes mins and the message to my landlord was a 2 min ask yesterday and they got back to me this morning so some of the mental/physical load that’s been weighing on me for months (years!) took minutes to sort! I just needed some of you to help me to get my head around some things.
the rest will be work in progress (work, and my feelings around this house), but I don’t feel so burdened.

You really are anazing.
Remember that.

Love your update! To a degree, I totally understand where you are coming from. I’ve been divorced since my kids were quite young and looking after an older house, garden, shopping, working full-time and prioritising the kids is a massive workload. I helped myself out by getting a cleaner after a couple of years killing myself doing it all. So pleased you feel clearer, good luck!

@JuliaBraverman its really hard and tiring isn’t it! Hope things get easier for you too.
