AIBU to wonder why holidays to Tunisia are so much cheaper?

To wonder why holidays to Tunisia are substantially cheaper than other places.

I was thinking of booking but when I’ve mentioned it to people they have said they wouldn’t go.

Am I missing something ?

Is it cheaper because it’s considered unsafe or something.

Id rather go to Europe than Africa.

Overtheatlantic · 20/07/2026 20:11

I’ve read it’s unsafe and women are constantly harassed even with their husbands present.

True dat

Minasama · 20/07/2026 20:12

Is it cheap compared to Africa or cheap compared to Europe.
Africa is a lot poorer than Europe and doesn’t have much private sector industry so you’d expect prices of everything there to be cheaper.

UndoRedo · 20/07/2026 20:12

I've been twice and love it,

TY78910 · 20/07/2026 20:13

Have a look on the foreign travel advice site, it’s unsafe in parts of the country as well as there have been reports on attacks on tourists previously.

True dat

Yes it’s hassle hassle hassle I’ve heard
I would never go myself
there’s a reason it’s cheap

Octavia64 · 20/07/2026 20:14

There were terrorist attacks.

7238SM · 20/07/2026 20:15

Its a developing country.

SpottyPyjama · 20/07/2026 20:15

Didn’t they have a terrorist attack on a beach a few years ago?

I’ve been to Tunisia and loved it but it doesn’t take much for a country to get bad press and then for tourism to decline. Especially Muslim countries. There is a lot of prejudice around.

Pippa12 · 20/07/2026 20:15

I’ve been. We stayed in a really good 5 hotel and didn’t leave. We were in the middle of nowhere. I’d go to do the same, but if you like mooching about or can’t afford the really good standard 5 hotels (3/4 isn’t comparable to a European 3/4) I would give it a wide berth.

AgnesMcDoo · 20/07/2026 20:18

They are still trying to recover their tourism industry after the terrorist
attacks some years ago.

we went last year it was amazing. I’d highly recommend it.

amazing hotel and trips trips - we rode camels and quad bikes in the Sahara,
visited mosques and star
wars movie sites me ancient Carthage

customer service best I ever experienced

It’s cheaper than everywhere else. Including other African countries.

Yes I’m aware if this. However it was over 10 years ago.

It’s unsafe, women will be pestered and harassed by men unless you stay solely in your all inclusive hotel. It’s a cheap country and I would not want to go there on holiday, same as Egypt etc. Also possibility of terrorist attacks and if things kicked off like they did in Dubai earlier this year, you’d have very little chance of getting out quickly. It’s a firm no from me. And I have travelled extensively through other dubious regions like South America and Russia.

Meckrel · 20/07/2026 20:20

It's not safe, especially for women? That's going to affect the price.

Friends took their teenage daughters. The DH said it was the most stressful 2 weeks of his life.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/07/2026 20:21

I've been, I loved it, I was 18 and didn't feel at all harassed walking around the towns and markets. We did a 2 day coach trip across the country and into the Sahara, it was great.

But since then there was a terrorist attack on western tourists. Understandably western tourists stopped going after that. I presume the cheap prices are trying to encourage people back.

Can you share the hotel please? I've looked at Tunisia a few times but haven't seen a 5 star hotel that actually looks 5 star yet..! Just browsing on the usual sites.

I'm keen to go to ancient Carthage before I kick the bucket. But I'll be old and fairly infirm, I travel alone and don't have that much money. Should I ditch this idea for good?

Other historic destinations are available, I just have a bee in my bonnet about this one.

RaraRachael · 20/07/2026 20:22

Friends of mine were taking a taxi back to their hotel from somewhere and the driver stopped in the middle of nowhere, told them to get out then drove off laughing.

I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

Its a developing country.

Tunisia has been a tourist destination for decades.
It’s ok if you arrive at your all inclusive hotel and don’t leave but be prepared to be hassled if you venture out.
The terrorist attack on the beach has definitely tainted the country for tourists.

Christmasbird · 20/07/2026 20:25

It's the Turkey of Africa

My freinds said their daughters were hassled even within the hotel.

My comment may no longer be relevant as my holiday was 1989. I hated it and couldn’t wait to leave. I was 17 though and it was my first holiday abroad. I wanted to go somewhere more exotic. My better travelled friend who was 10 years older took it all in her stride. I couldn’t handle the constant male attention.
