Do washing pods make your machine smell?

I've used eco eggs for years but they aren't strong enough for teenage boys in hot weather smells so I switched to pods (Fairy). I've been using them for about 2 months. I double rinse the clothes.

I do regular service washes, always leave the door open etc. I have never had a smelly washing machine. But now my machine stinks! I've just put it on the longest, hottest cycle with a vinegar prewash.

But I'm surprised by how much foam there is in the machine which is obviously from left over pods/detergent. Is this what has made my machine so smelly? Are all pods like this?

We literally have nowhere to store a box of powder. Plus this is the only non ecoegg stuff I've used that hasn't had my family moaning about being itchy.

I’ve been using Smol non bio pods for years, never had a problem. I do try and remember to do a very hot wash with white vinegar and bicarb every so often, it seems to work.

I found my washing didn’t smell all that clean using pods and often there would be residue in the machine so I’d have to rinse again. I use liquid now.

I use liquid for colours and powder for whites and clean the drawer out regularly. After every wash I wipe out the seal so there is no pool of water in the bottom, and I leave the door open. This seems to work for me.

Smol pods are just detergent, not conditioner, so better for the machine. Or you could buy laundry detergent sheets.

It could be that you are overdosing detergent. Liquid detergent and pods are more suspectible to creating scrud.

I prefer using powder detergent.

I just find it difficult to believe that I have never had a smelly machine (ever) but I change to pods and within a few months it smells but it's not due to the pods.

I will look up Smol. I'm not bothered about conditioner. I never used it. Is Smol OK for sensitive skin? What is the fragrance like? I dont like clothes that smell like washing products.

i only use powder - liquid causes smells.

My washing machine stunk a few months ago. I've used pods forever. I ended up buying washing machine cleaner and switching to fairy powder. It's now all fine again and I don't get a film of slime on the glass/seal.

I also think it's cleaning better than pods ever did.

Are you using non bio? Because that won’t kill of the build up of bacteria in the machine and eventually it will stink. I always use Persil or Bold pods and always wash everything at 40 after similar issues and no problems now at all.

Bio powder is best.

My washing machine repair man said to only use powder. Apparently it helps to clear all the gunk out of the pipes. I've always used powder since then (10-15 years) and have never had an issue. Much better for the environment in plastic terms too.

It's soap scum/residue that makes the machine smell. Bacteria can feed on it. Pods will by design err on the side of too much detergent because they are designed to just be chucked in without thinking about the exact dosing.

You can dose more accurately with liquid or powder, so use enough to get rid of the sweaty smells but little enough that it doesn't harm the machine. Powder tends to be better for the machine from what I have heard.

To clear the build up of scum, buy a washing machine cleaner sachet from your supermarket or any anti-limescale powder (which is usually just powdered citric acid) and add the recommended amount to the drum, empty, then run a standard hot wash (90/95 degrees is best) or a drum cleaning cycle if you have one.

You can buy washing powder in small bags which are about the same size as a box of pods.

Pods have plastic bits which will leave a scum. And you can’t adjust the amount of detergent.

Best thing is to only use powder and to use an appropriate temperature and a proper length of wash. If you skimp on any of these things smells in both your machine and clothes will build up.

What’s with a double rinse? With powder you can just use less of it.

I use Ariel pods and just leave the door ajar to air the machine afterwards. Never had any issues. I do clean the drawer and seal regularly though.

Fairy do a non bio powder in a small box of 10 washes' worth, so wouldn't take up much room to try out.

I banned dh from buying fairy pods cos they stink!

I have used fairy liquid for donkeys years but those pods are vile!!

I only use pods persil daz or arial, 2 pods in a time for big wash add washing 45 mins later smells lovely.
1 pod for small load.

edited to add, i do leave the door open when im done and clean the machine once a month drum clean and all.

I’ve been told by plumbers what pods aren’t the best for washing machines, they can cause a buildup in the pipes apparently. I have no idea if that’s true or not though.
I use the smol biological pods but I also use daz powder. My washing machine did stink once when I was solely using pods so I mix it up but I love the smell of the smol pods so won’t stop using them completely.

for stinky clothes spray the arm pits with white vinegar before washing it works a treat. Don’t use fabric softener on materials like gym t-shirts / footballs strips either it helps stop the stink.
if there’s anything really smelly being washed I use halo sports wash and a vinegar rinse and it always leaves everything nice and fresh

I have only ever used fairy pods because I hate the smell of the rest and my machine is never smelly and the clothes have always come out fresh and clean without that awful cheap smell off some other brands. Never had a dirty machine in all my years using fairy pods at all.

Yes they do, especially on low temperatures. Machine engineer told me the wrapping never fully dissolves and goes all slimy in the pipes and starts stinking after a while. Do a few 90 degree washes and start using powder or power tablets.

I have two sons and dh all sporty and use aldi powder and have for years. I decant it inot a white ikea box

I use daz powder with waitrose non-bio added if it's a white wash. I just use liquids for more delicate things.
