AIBU to think my colleague's anti England comment was rude?

What would you make of this? A colleague declared in front of the whole team in the office the other day that she’d never ever support England in any sport due to their history colonialism. Personally I think it’s rude and fails to read the room. Most people had been enjoying cheering on England in the World Cup so to hear this felt a bit like raining on the parade. This woman is African but living in England and reaping all the benefits that come with that. I’m Black too but proud to say I’m English and happy to cheer on the players, who include plenty of black men who I assume also cheer on England!!

What is anti English about not supporting a football team?

Having lived in Nigeria and been asked hundreds of times a day to help them get a visa to go to England, I can 100% say this comment would be made by a Nigerian.

Bluntly, you sound like a loon. I’ve lived in five countries on three continents for long or longish periods. I am not speaking for anyone other than myself, I have never felt the need not to criticise where I was currently living, or to pretend to have amnesia about the impact of that country’s imperial past on other parts of the world. Have you lived in many places outside your home country?

Send her up to Scotland to say the same things about Scotland and their diabolical effort at football.

Taking the upper hand, claiming moral superiority; in some cases, seeking special privileges because you 'don't feel safe', even if it's members of your own demographic who are the ones who are harassing and threatening others.

Hands up those on the thread who have spent any considerable period living outside their own country of origin. Because some of you are being deeply strange, especially on a site where the 'This country is awful and I would emigrate except I have no skills or languages that will make me valuable elsewhere' post is almost a tradition.

Also, seriously? It's a bunch of guys kicking a ball around, and doing it rather well. I get that English people are disappointed they didn't win, but the team did very well by any standards. I don't think you're in need of special kid glove treatment because of it.

It is very strange indeed, my partner adores football and watches matches from all over the world even very small teams in other continents, including Africa. He would never ever be offended by someone choosing not to support England despite living here.

No - you’re missing the main point. She’s free to support who she likes. It was the gratuitous rudeness and ignorance that was the issue.

I made it very clear that I was talking about wider claimed victimhood, not connected with race or nationality.

The woman herself in the OP was making it about far more than football. Like with the 'Anyone but England' that certain tiresome Scots haver on about, the football is just used as an excuse for pettiness and hatred.
