AIBU to start cooking first and find the recipe later?

Does anyone else do this?! My family think I am super weird. I am very much a ‘bodge it and run’ instinctive cook- not great at following recipes but excellent a making something out of random back of the cupboard.

Today I fancied fried courgettes for some reason- light summer food- so I started frying them and then googled a recipe to fit around it. Ended up with a nice warm lentil salad. But I didn’t really know that’s what it was going to be.

I don’t do it all the time but I do do it quite a lot of the time. I don’t think it’s weird - variety being the spice of life and all that. I do also do regular meals like spag hol etc!!

is it weird?! Am sure there are other people who do the same. Cooking the same family meals over and over again is so bloody boring so it’s nice to mix it up I think!! My husband needs to plan way in advance and follow a recipe to the letter with no deviation!

Cooks come in all shapes and sizes and if bodge it and run works for you then crack on. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer.

YABU to call it bodge it and run...

"A throw together" is what you do, there's nothing wrong with that.
And, if it's made with love it'll taste real good.

Sorry not helpful but I tried to do fried courgettes the other night! Winging it didn't work. How did you do it?

Sometimes especially for something new following a recipe is a great idea

and for people who are not confident they are great

ot if you want to guarantee consistency or success or you are feeding people and want to be as safe as possible

but being able to adjust to your ingredients and local preferences is a great skill too

I sometimes start cooking something like chicken or potatoes without knowing what I’m going to turn it into later… But it wouldn’t occur to me to google a recipe. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have the other necessary ingredients, so I just make it up as I go along.
