Is freelance writing possible these days?

A decade ago I was working part-time and doing some freelance writing on the side. I was published in various newspapers and magazines - most paid, some unpaid but given e.g. free travel.

Having kids with disabilities sapped all my creative energy but I'm thinking of giving it another go now things are easier. I'm wondering if it's worth it rhough these days with so many blogs and the influence of AI etc. It would really only be feasible if I could generate a bit of income instead of just for fun.

Interested to hear from.any other writers what it's like now.

There is a lot of demand for horror short stories (around 3-5k words). Lots of channels on YouTube do immersive narrations of stories and are always looking for more writers to work with. They pay per story and rates go up if your stories are popular with the audience. It's very strictly no AI use allowed

There are probably a lot of similar small niches around YouTube - many video essayists are hiring co-writers but that's much more research based. It depends on your exact skills

Yes, it can still work. People depending on AI for writing may have an impact on the market. The thing about AI writing is that some of the facts aren’t verified, it’s simplistic, and written at a pretty low reading level. It doesn’t have style. Most importantly, it doesn’t have a real VOICE. It’s flimsy. But some sites and some editors don’t care. So, be ready to tell them why hiring you is smarter and better. Best of luck,
