AIBU?

Share your dilemmas and get honest opinions from other Mumsnetters.

To get so irritated with threads where posters insist on taking other peoples situations personally?

Hopefully people know what I mean; the ones where someone says ‘AIBU to be annoyed DDs childminder suddenly closed with a moments notice?’ and someone replies ‘I am a childminder and it’s parents like you that meant I shut for good!’

The above is general and not aimed at childminders; could literally be anything.

Why can’t people take the situation as it is without taking it personally?

I am a poster and it's critical threads like this that make me really upset. We're all just trying our best to help and then people come up with stuff like this. I don't know why I bother.

At least you have a mother. Mine died and I miss her every day.

JustAnotherWhinger · 17/07/2026 09:21

Often it’s because people will find any reason to jump on an OP

On some days someone could post “AIBU to announce a cure for cancer” and someone would jump on them for taking too long/sounding too smug. Someone else would likely jump on a SPAG error as well.

I agree completely. Having lost my mother I am still able to understand that for many people still having a mother is worse than not having one!

ScrambledEggs12 · 17/07/2026 09:27

On a similar vein, someone who is struggling with a newborn and people say 'just you wait until they're a toddler'.

I've seen it on here, but more from my experiences elsewhere. Filled me with unnecessary dread as actually the newborn stage for me was definitely the hardest part!

JFDIYOLO · 17/07/2026 09:35

I must admit I may have said something along the lines of 'just wait til perimenopause - you ain't seen nothing yet'

Disappointedlama · 17/07/2026 09:42

I agree. It often derails discussions and makes it difficult to have a constructive conversation about certain topics.

For example, in the thread about the poor child who was thrown into the crocodile pit, some people defended the attacker based on their own experiences with family members who have learning disabilities. I understand that it's an emotional subject for many, but discussions quickly become unproductive when people dismiss opposing views by accusing others of being ableist, racist or classist simply because they disagree with a comment.

GreenWheat · 17/07/2026 09:50

I'm with you OP, some people just can't help personalising things. I once made a comment that the cause of a dog being overweight is often that the owner is overfeeding it. This one poster just wouldn't entertain that notion because her own dog was overweight because of medication. Fine, but that still doesn't hold true for lots of chubby doggies!

But isn’t the point of posting is to get others experience? While yes if not on the point (like the mother example above) and I can’t stand the responses of ‘read the room not many can afford expensive holidays/private school/blah blah’.
But if you’ve lived a similar experience and can relate and hope that it may help reassure/advise/have a different viewpoint isn’t that why people ask?

Yeah but it’s the difference between ‘I was a childminder and unfortunately sometimes last minute closures were unavoidable due to emergency situations beyond my control. I think she should have backup plans in place though’ and ‘wah wah wah but what about meeeee.’

It’s the COL ones where people on minimum wage pile on anyone over 30k salary. You can’t possibly be affected by COL! How dare you!

Overtheatlantic · 17/07/2026 11:13

As seen on Facebook. “Why do so many murderers bury victims in their own backyards?”

Comment: “Not everyone has the trunk space or gas money to drive way out in the middle of nowhere to dump their bodies. Check your privilege.”

SomersetBrie · 17/07/2026 11:20

I also hate the "it's easy for young people to get a job. When I was fourteen 35 years ago I had three jobs".

And "why don't you just get an Uber? It would only cost a tenner"

PetChipGirl · 17/07/2026 11:22

It’s the competitive victim status trend, isn’t it. Airheads shouting “ poor me” every five minutes.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 17/07/2026 11:22

I think learning to generalise is a skill that not everyone has. When I first moved to my now country I got very upset whenever anyone bitched about foreigners. I didn't know how to not take it personally, but I've gradually learned
Not entirely sure how though.
