How often for updates from school?

Year 7 child (age 12) on a residential trip with school.

No phones allowed (which pleases me as we do limit phone time at home).

Away from first thing Wednesday morning until last thing on Friday. Trip is maybe 90 minutes or so away from the school. Travel by coach.

How often would you expect an update/post/comment from the school?

Last week there was another trip and they updated twice a day.

These days I’ve no idea as my children aren’t in school yet , but I went on a week long residential trip in year 6, primary school- so I was 11. No body had phones at that age back then and we were not allowed to phone our parents off a landline, they let each child have 1 phone call during the previous years, but they stopped it because too many kids were getting upset.

I think I’d feel a little uneasy not hearing from or having any updates for my 11 year old for a whole week.

FckThisShit · 17/07/2026 14:38

On our primary residential they updated once a day on an evening. For that amount of time for secondary school I don't think I'd expect any updates.

Mh67 · 17/07/2026 15:12

None

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 17/07/2026 15:38

We heard nothing from the school for any of DDs trips, (shes 18 now), whether short or long, except for a message updating on arrival times back.

Wouldn't really have expected any more really.

RedStripeLeaf · 17/07/2026 16:13

I'd expect to hear nothing if all was well, provided I knew beforehand what time they'd be arriving back, and where they would arrive back to.

JuliettaCaeser · 17/07/2026 16:14

Land the helicopter op! Leave them alone. Teachers have enough to do without assuaging adults anxieties.

CeciliaMars · 17/07/2026 16:16

I feel like this expected constant contact is quite a new thing. It’s 2 nights and they’re at secondary school! I’d expect a quick message to say they arrived then look forward to hearing all about it at the end.

Teenagerantruns · 17/07/2026 16:25

Was a long time since mine have been but we used to get a daily all wells sign in the school hall, only any good if you picking up other kids l suppose.
Mine didnt have phones but l figured if there was a drama they would call me, and there was always a drama with my youngest so was happy not to hear anything.

lanthanum · 17/07/2026 16:33

"No news is good news" is fine for secondary school residentials.

mondaytosunday · 17/07/2026 16:39

We got a group text saying ‘arrived and settled in’! I think that’s it. I mean that was for a five day trip in Y6. Don’t think I’d expect anything for a two day one!

I'd not expect an update at all, even a week. I wouldn't expect an update if they went away for a week end of primary school either. If there's an issue they'll let you know, if not everything's fine.

This. Your children are safe in their teachers care. They'll keep you updated if theres a need, no news is good news. Are you a worrier generally?

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 17/07/2026 16:43

I don't think I'd expect an update as such, but I do think (even on day trips) the school normally do social media posts "everyone enjoying xyz activity in France". It's nice to see what they're up to and that everyone is smiling! I wouldn't worry or be upset without that though- reality is, the teachers have phones, so any concerns and they will ring you directly. Before mobile phones, email and social media it was just a wave goodbye and hope for the best for a week....

shoesandshipsandsealingwax · 17/07/2026 16:44

I wouldn't expect any updates for secondary school.

EmmaB1309 · 17/07/2026 16:47

Ours posted photos on X every day, sometimes a few times a day depending on what they were doing. Also updated when arrived at centre and when leaving, and one update on the road home to give eta. This was a five day trip, 10/11 year olds. They also had no phones. Felt about the right amount.

dizzydizzydizzy · 17/07/2026 16:58

I wouldn’t expect any communication, except possible they have arrived safely. No news is good news.

RedandWhiteStars · 17/07/2026 17:00

We had to talk down (over WhatsApp chat) a parent calling the emergency number when their child went away for a few days in year 7. I like the updates but I realise everyone is busy and updates take time. It was crazy how anxious this parent got despite all the other parents trying to reassure her.

I don’t think the constant expectation of updates is healthy.

Wewalkthewalk · 17/07/2026 17:10

I wouldn’t expect any updates: my kids are both primary age (9 and 6) and go on Cub/Beaver camp for a couple of nights and I don’t expect anything. They do sometimes send round photos after, which is fun.

Ablondiebutagoody · 17/07/2026 17:13

Typically once per evening.

"Kids had a great time today doing x,y,z, have eaten dinner and now enjoying some down time before bed. All happy but tired."

Pretty pointless really.

Xanhi · 17/07/2026 17:17

For secondary, I might expect an 'arrived safely' and a 'we are due back at..' but that is about it.

maryhinge88 · 17/07/2026 17:20

I think some there are chances of a mixture of non tech savvy teachers, vulnerable children who can’t be in photos which may cause serious safety issues, and parents who go absolutely nuts of their children being in any pics.

Meadowfinch · 17/07/2026 17:24

It's only two days. I wouldn't expect to hear from them unless something went wrong.

They're practicing for being teenagers when they don't speak to you for weeks on end. 😁

Golftarget · 16/07/2026 22:51

Out of interest, what would be the threshold of trip length when you would expect an update? Eg, if the trip was a week, you’d expect an update after 5 days, or would you not expect something for a trip of a week either? Or would there be a difference in expectation between updates for kids in Year 7 to kids in Year 10? Not goading, genuinely interested.

I wouldn’t expect any update unless something serious happens.

mustardrarebit · 17/07/2026 18:11

None. We didn't have updates on y4 or y6 residential, rainbows or brownies sleepovers. Eldest child goes to boarding school and despite having a phone for an hour each evening, she doesn't call or text unless she has something interesting to say. No news is good news.

AgnesMcDoo · 17/07/2026 18:13

facebook updates are nice but not necessary

you don’t need updates. They will do it if they have time.

mindutopia · 17/07/2026 18:14

Maybe once a day. When dd went to France in Y6 for 6 nights, they had no phones and I’d say we got maybe 1-3 updates a day. And by updates, I mean, we had a link to a secure website and they posted a load of photos with “lovely day to see the Louvre, everyone enjoyed a hot chocolate and pastry for breakfast!” But they were gone for just about a week in another country. For a residential trip in the UK, once a day.
