Do you drive in flip flops?

Incandescentangel · Today 07:50

I was people watching in a coffee shop yesterday, and noticed how many people were wearing flip flops. I started wondering how many of them had driven there wearing flip flops. I have always considered it a bit dangerous so I change into a pair of shoes for driving. Am I being sensible, or am I just being ridiculous?

Sometimes I do. Sometimes I take them off and drive in bare feet.

MyballsareSandy2015 · Today 07:51

I’m sure it’s illegal …

I don’t as I’d be worried it’d catch on a pedal or something.

Londonrach1 · Today 07:51

No why would you it's very dangerous.

JulietOscarBoring · Today 07:52

I do drive in flip flops but you are being sensible changing into shoes.

Ridingthegravytrain · Today 07:52

I thought it was illegal too

A friend was told off my the police for driving in flip flops so I’ve always assumed it’s not allowed as it’s dangerous

SENsupportplease · Today 07:52

I take them off and drive barefoot

GimmieABreakOr3 · Today 07:53

I’ve driven in flip flops before

Silverbirchleaf · Today 07:54

No, I wouldn’t.

Its not illegal to drive in flip- flops.

OwlCalledSage · Today 07:54

I do, or Birkenstock Arizonas. All the time.

MissyB1 · Today 07:54

Very rarely. Dh often drives barefoot.

I cant even walk in flip flops let alone drive in them. I like a sturdy foot wear choice.

BirdLandedonmyHead · Today 07:55

Proper shoes only... nearly had a slip on come off once while driving, it was a shock. If they come off, they can get trapped under the brake pedal.
Not worth it.

youngwhippersnapper · Today 07:56

I wouldn’t drive in flip flops or any other sandals as it’s not safe.
I keep an old pair of flat shoes in the car.
Don’t feel safe driving in heels or boots either.

DierdreDaphne · Today 07:56

Would not drive a manual car in flipflops but confess to having driven the automatic in a (reasonably sturdy rather than floppy) pair, for short distances. I have small feet and think id find it harder to reach the pedals if i took them off..but I think you are correct to wear actual shoes.

ToffeePennie · Today 07:56

Flip flops belong in the bin. No support for your feet, exposure to all the elements and they don’t even protect your feet from things like glass or dog poo. Get rid!

jackstini · Today 07:56

It’s not specifically illegal to drive in flip flops (or barefoot) but if doing so stops you driving safely you shouldn’t:

“The Highway Code: Rule 97 states that your clothing and footwear must not prevent you from using the vehicle controls correctly.”

I don’t - but I don’t wear flip flops as I can’t stand anything between my toes!

I do drive in flip flops and hadn’t even thought it might be damgerous until now! I guess I’ll start going bare foot

shoesandshipsandsealingwax · Today 07:57

No. I take them off and drive barefoot in summer.

PeonyBulb · Today 07:57

I drove in flip flops one time years ago and they got stuck under the pedal. So yes i can attest to the fact that it’s extremely dangerous

MistakenFlutterby · Today 07:57

It’s not illegal but you can be charged with careless driving if your footwear (or lack of footwear) contributes to an accident eg if your flip flops come off and get stuck under a pedal.

Haha yes they are no good for my plantar fasciitis so not being worn for anything this summer 😅

maisybobbins · Today 07:58

Birkenstocks yes. Flip flops no.

I agree. Fully enclosed, flat, shoes only for driving. Before I had this rule, I had a heel get caught in the carpet of the car. That was a fucking frightening few seconds til it came out and I had full control again!

I don't think barefoot is a good idea either (I think it's illegal in Australia, for good reason).

I'll happily drive in any footwear that feels secure on my foot and is safe. I dont have a blanket no heels or not flip-flops rule, it depends on the shoe.

As it happens my sliders are fine but I won't wear my trainers as I can't feel the pedals properly.

I actually learned to drive in bare feet as I couldn't wear shoes to drive, it took me years to come round to driving in shoes.
