Sister moved into her first proper today and it’s filthy

My sister got the keys today to her part rent part buy property and she’s gutted as it’s absolutely filthy.

Is this something she can complain about to the estate agents or is it for her to sort?

Could you possibly also hire a specialist cleaning company, might be short notice but sometimes they can come and do a deep clean for about £80, depends where you are. When I moved into my first owned flat I had to do a proper gut, the previous owner hadn't even cleaned the bathroom properly!!!

She must've seen it before she moved in?

But I agree with those saying SO isn't your typical landlord/tenant relationship. The HA will own a % of the property but all repairs and maintenance is her responsibility.

I have only ever bought one property, it was pristine when I moved in. I must have got lucky, seeing the reality for other people.

When we moved house I cleaned our old flat until it shone! Literally mopped out the door and locked it.
turned up at our new house and it was like they packed and walked out. I felt so sad. There is still some of their shit in our attic!

It’s annoying but little to be done now. I had the same with my place. I had viewed it in the tiny amount of time you have to view it and had missed the dust from the refurbishment. It was not easy to see as it camouflaged in the white skirting, window sills etc and I had not inspected the airing cupboard in detail.

I had to get it deep cleaned. I learned next time to make that a stipulation when I moved into a new place.

When I moved into my HA house it was empty but it needed a clean. Luckily i had a week crossover leaving my flat. I spent a week gutting it… including using a wallpaper scraper to get the grease off the kitchen cupboards and tweezers to get stuff out the radiators. They were grim but once it was clean and flooring put in it felt like home.

Incorrect. In this situation the HA is simply there to enable buyers to own a property when their income wouldn't normally enable them to do so. They are not the go to people to sort out any little issue unless it involves communal repairs. They are not responsible for anything inside the property and they will not get involved in this situation.

I work for a HA and am forever having to explain this to shared owners who buy properties with absolutely no understanding of their responsibilities.

I'd take marigolds, cleaning cloths, and many cleaning agents - especially bathroom and kitchen ones. Ensure you are wearing old clothes that the odd bleach spot won't ruin!

I would also ensure access to good music you can sing along to whilst cleaning up the detritus of someone else's life.

I would also book the local pub for an evening meal, or arrange a takeaway.

Good luck! Keep it light and positive and it will soon be done. The joy of house ownership is that you can't just ring someone else to solve your problems, you have to do it yourself!

It’s ridiculous isn’t it? People really have lost the ability to problem solve for themselves. The house needs a clean, as do most houses when you move in. What’s the big deal?

Are you serious? I was quoted £500 for a deep clean of a four bed house.

If she or you can afford it, get contract cleaners in for a few hours to do the kitchen and bathrooms at least.

Only if you polish your princess tiara first before you demand your property is deep cleaned for you!

I’ve bought 2 houses that were filthy on arrival, I’ve ripped out sodden carpet on the day I’ve moved in, nothing you can do alas - would cost more to sue than you would get. Annoying but one of those things
