Driver almost ran us over crossing the road and did not even notice - at train station

My mum, my daughter and I were trying to cross the road to get to the train station. The entrance road is quite narrow

A taxi stopped and waved us cross. We were already halfway across the road when another car came speeding round the corner and nearly hit us. The driver did not even notice us.
He then got really impatient and basically forced the taxi to reverse so he could get through.

when you say came speeding around the corner, do you actually mean turned into the road at a typical speed which seemed fast because you were walking? If you cross a road so close to a junction you run the risk of a car turning in and not seeing you until they have.

I feel like the worst pedant but I’m actually confused by the diagram. According to the blue arrow, you were walking away from the area where the driver was trying to turn into and already in front of the taxi. Is the road so narrow that you couldn’t continue to cross the street and the driver was trying to take the exact location where the taxi was or were you not walking in front of the taxi yet?

Regardless, this is the UK, pedestrians have right of way, the driver needs to be more careful, but he sounds like an impatient shiteheel. Glad you’re all safe.

This sort of thing has happened to both my wife and to me on separate occasions this week.
Then the opposite, this morning a woman pushing a prom into the road in the path of an oncoming car!
She remained oblivious as the poor driver looked completely shocked!
I am so wary at zebra crossings, pelican crossings and any sort of junction.
Although to be fair, many drivers are kind when they see my walking stick and wobbly gait.
i think the hot weather is making everyone crazy!!

We were infront of the taxi and had to stop so the other car did not hit us.

Similar happened to me when picking up dc from primary school. Driver shoot in but luckily managed to do an emergency stop and no one was hit. This was about 20 metres from school reception.

It is driving 101 that you look into the road before making a turn.

Depending on the road, you may not have full view of pedestrians before you turn so thats why its not advisable as a pedestrian to cross too close to a junction.

Really you needed to be crossing further up not exactly where cars were trying to turn on a junction. It wasn't the safest place to cross. That said the person turning in should have been paying more attention. If the road he was turning off was very busy he may have made a split second decision to turn. It's tricky to comment really without knowing how busy all the roads were and where it might have been safer for you to cross. I don't trust anyone whether driving or walking.

Yes, this is true and the pedestrian does have right of way in this situation.

Having said all that, when I am crossing a road I am still on the lookout for any cars turning in this way. In the OPs shoes I think I would either have not crossed so near the junction or I would have been checking for a car turning in from the other road.

It may be the driver's responsibility to look out for pedestrians and give way to them, but that would be no comfort to me if I got run over by an inattentive driver. Hence, I don't rely on them doing the right thing, I look out for myself.

A driver should slow down to a very low speed if they don't have visibility, it is completely unacceptable to make a manoeuvre in an unsafe manner.

there is no where else to cross to get to the station - due to were the path ends - everyone crosses here. This is why car drivers need to be careful pulling into this road

Surely the taxi shouldn't have waved you across though? I was taught that waving pedestrians or other cars was dangerous.

You did nothing wrong. The driver was at fault.

The advice is not to, but the taxi's position is irrelevant - the other car's behaviour was the issue.

On the diagram I attached on the left side -there is a giant wall - there is no path. If you know this station you know as a car driver you have to be careful turning.

Rule H2 applies to drivers, motorcyclists horse-drawn vehicles, horse riders and cyclists. It reads:

“At a junction you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning.”

From January 2022 a pedestrian waiting to cross should be given priority. Previously, drivers were told to give way to pedestrians if they ‘have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road’. The change also appears in the revised Rule 170.

Rule H2 also advises drivers on pedestrian priority at zebra crossings. Rule 195 goes into more detail and tells us that drivers:

MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
SHOULD give way when a pedestrian is waiting to cross
Although drivers are asked to give way more often, pedestrians still have a responsibility to cross safely. A new addition to Rule 8 makes it clear that pedestrians should ‘cross at a place where drivers can see you.’

Outing to where station is. Attached picture - everyone crosses here - the big red line. Since station entrance to the left and zebra crossing to the right. Path ends here due to the big wall. If you know this station you know you enter and exit the road carefully because there is so many people who cross here and the entrance is narrow (need to watch for cars leaving).

Anyone driving any speed into that area is at fault, it is clearly an area where slow speed is needed.

I read your first post and saw the diagram and thought "that sounds and looks like X train station" 🤔

X being the train station I've been local to/constantly using for almost 30 years

Saw the photo and thought yep, that's X! And yep, I've almost been run over there...

You can't walk up the cab side, everyone and their dog in this city walks the way you walked on the pavemement, then crosses. Everyone who drives and walks in and out of the station knows this. You just get the occasional idiot.
