Neighbour is playing music in their house and I can hear it from my garden 😠

I’m trying to relax in my garden after work and all I can hear is their speaker!

I can see it from the bottom of my garden, it’s on their windowsill. It’s not blaring but it’s enough that I can hear it when I go near the top of the garden. I think they’re doing some diy as I can hear furniture moving!

AIBU to go and get my hose and spray their window until it stops?! 😠

I hate having to listen to other people's music, no idea why anyone would put a speaker on a window ledge of an open window and not realise it's going to be heard by surrounding neighbours.

I also hate bonfires, especially at a time of lovely weather when windows are open.....something that may also piss off your neighbour...

So by your own admission, it’s not loud and you can only hear it when you go near the top of your garden? Am I reading that correctly??

are you serious?? It’s evening time and people are allowed to enjoy themselves in the comfort of their own property..

now if it was blasting out at full volume at 10pm then fair enough…

you are so unreasonable with your selfish thoughts, you are the problem here if someone playing music on a lovely evening at a sensible level annoys you that much!! Do you need a virtual hug?

That’s the council, not my opinion.

It’s that shit pop music that only idiots like.

Fortunately for the rest of the world, your opinion counts for nothing.

Goditsmemargaret · 14/07/2026 19:54

Get a grip.

BarbaraVineFan · 14/07/2026 19:57

I think this is a wind-up. Surely nobody thinks the music should be turned off by 7pm? That’s when most people turn on their music for the evening!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/07/2026 20:01

@chinupimdancing

"...I can hear furniture moving!"

DON'T DO ANYTHING!
They probably have a poltergeist...😳

malloryknox123 · 14/07/2026 20:03

You might be my neighbour, if you are, I’m sorry but I had to cover the sound of the screaming toddler I’ve had to listen to for 3 days on the trot. Lorde rocks

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/07/2026 20:05

I’ve given up giving a shit worrying about my music and the neighbours. I have to deal with their cannabis stench so even stevens

herbalteabag · 14/07/2026 20:08

You sound bonkers, is this a joke? Even if the speaker was further into the room, sound travels about on summer's evenings when everyone has the windows open. I can hear my son's music from the bottom of our garden and it would be the same if I was next door.
Even worse.... I can hear open air gigs in the park nearby almost every week throughout summer here and they don't finish until 10 or 11! What about if I don't like the music?

I absolutely do. It’s 8:30 now and they’re still going.

I laughed out loud at your last sentence OP, thank you! Great picture.

It's infuriating isn't it? Sadly, there aren't any legal guaranteed ways to make people considerate on the issue of noise. Possibly blasting classical music at her until she closes the window will do the job, but it's very much two wrongs...

I would say though, that lots of people are a bit oblivious but, despite shockingly poor taste in music, don't actually want to upset their neighbours. So unless you've tried talking to her in the past and know better, it's worth a knock on her door to see if she'll move her speaker.

Gosh, I hope you have called the police for the reasonable not loud music that you can only hear in certain parts of your garden, what complete bastards they are!!

I don’t think the type of person who listens to that music will be amenable to a polite request.

As it’s after 7pm I’d certainly expect music to stop!

Now I know you’re just making shit up.

Usernamedulychanged · 14/07/2026 21:31

I agree that people who impose their music taste on others are exceedingly selfish. There’s no excuse for it.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 14/07/2026 21:49

Honestly, do something better then a shit wind up, you suck at it 😂

Popstarrrrr · 14/07/2026 22:01

I love Mumsnet it's a window into how other people live....which judging by this thread is quite strangely.

It wouldn't occur to me that music needs to be off at 7pm. I live in a tiny terrace so can hear everything. Neighbour on one side is giggling in the garden with their new boyfriend, neighbour on the other side is dealing with a tantruming child, neighbour at the back is shouting along to the football and at the back to the side the guy's shouting down the phone, not in English so I can't nose properly but in any language it's clear when someone's pissed. I have my speaker by the back door and reckon you'd hate upon hate my music but I love it!
