AIBU to object to balloon and lantern memorial releases for environmental reasons ?

I do wish people would stop releasing balloons in tribute to lost loved ones.

Balloons don’t up to heaven. They travel a few miles and usually land in a farmer’s field. Where animals eat the balloon and get very ill or die.

This method is a cruel and other creatures can die.

Also still can get Chinese lanterns online. Anyone setting these off now are idiots. Forest fires

Pound shops full of those stupid lanterns. Its not only funerals I have heard of them being let off at weddings as well. I think they are Chinese but whatever they are dangerous and cheap rubbish.
The balloons are just as bad but they certainly are not that cheap by the time they are inflated as well.
I agree with petals they use them at weddings instead of confetti. I suppose people like things to float so perhaps bubbles instead though I am not keen on those.
Please do not use doves either a lot die when let out at weddings through shock its a horrible custom

But let's hope that's not for much longer. We are drowning in a sea of litter in the UK and balloons and lanterns are adding to it. The balloons land on the ground in a different place from where they were launched but that doesn't make them any less littering.

Just suppose for a moment that all your released balloons by coincidence came down in your own garden. Would you just leave them there or would you pick them up? What if your dog tried to eat one and choked on it? Would you care then?

It seems to me that you don't care at the moment because you're not directly affected by the aftermath. So, as far as you're concerned, it's OK if all the litter lands on somebody else's land and it's OK if somebody else's animal, or a wild animal, is injured or dies.

You feel your own losses and wish to commemorate them, but you care nothing for the losses of other people or of innocent animals. Don't let your own grief blind you to the needs of others. I hope in time that you will be more able to look out at the world beyond yourself and understand it more.

Yeah, this, the millions of bit of litter people drop every day, reindeer food at Xmas, just all of it. All tat in the environment. There's loads of alternatives that are just fine. Don't need balloons or lanterns for memorial, we didn't have them 50 years ago and did just fine remembering our loved ones.

Local church up the road used to hold a yearly memorial service with the local undertakers with fireworks. Man, that was loud. They stopped a few years ago because of animal care and littering, thankfully.
