AIBU to ask whether you own a Bible?

BeanQuisine · Today 07:12

Just idle curiosity, really.

We often hear right-wingers insisting "This is a Christian country", whether we're in UK, Oz or the US etc.

So I'm wondering how many of us actually own Bibles, and whether we ever read them. I did read assorted bits of it in my youth, but don't currently own a Bible.

YABU: Whether Mumsnetters own Bibles or not is none of your business.

YANBU: It's a vaguely interesting question.

No.

ScaredAndPanicky · Today 07:14

I have many and I read them regularly

FuzzyPuffling · Today 07:14

Yes, several.

HinzKunz · Today 07:14

I do but I always wonder whether those shouting about this being a Christian country do and whether they have ever read it.

Santasbigredbobblehat · Today 07:14

Yes. I studied Theology for A-Level so have a study Bible with extra books.

Goinggonegone · Today 07:15

Yes. Two.

Santasbigredbobblehat · Today 07:15

I’m not a Christian.

Senparentingonandon · Today 07:15

Yes I own several bibles.

Rocknrollstar · Today 07:15

Yes but it’s a long time since I read it

Settlersa · Today 07:15

Absolutely not

ShetlandishMum · Today 07:16

Yes. More than one.
I can read it in the original languages too.

PermanentTemporary · Today 07:16

I’m going to say yes, more than one as DP and I amalgamated households not that long ago, plus an annotated Jewish Bible from my previous marriage. I have to say it would take me a few minutes to find one though. I haven’t read any for a long time but I think I’ve read pretty much all of it during my lifetime and obviously some bits a lot.

celandiney · Today 07:16

Yes, I have more than one , I used to read regularly but now it’s very occasional.

I still do, but it’s one that's been passed down the generations. I’m not religious, but I wouldn’t get rid of it.

PetiteParakeet · Today 07:17

We have two antique Bibles, a New Internationalist version, and an old Ladybird Bible which is one of the books from my childhood I’ve kept for sentimental reasons. I’m still an atheist though!

Ireolu · Today 07:19

Does the app count?

I read the bible app once or twice a week on average. I also did RE/theology/philosophy at A level so I had a physical bible somewhere just don't know where.

user1476613140 · Today 07:19

I was gifted a set of bibles new and old testament children's version when I attended Sunday school as a child. I have never looked at them for years but the set is up my loft.

Icantbebothered · Today 07:20

I have two. A childrens bible I was goven when I was christened and a ‘normal’ bible. I’m not religious though and consider myself an athiest (I think religion causes more hatred, intolerance and division than anything else in this world)

Sartre · Today 07:20

Yes and a Quran and Torah. I’m an English Lit academic and you’d be surprised how useful these texts are.

Pedant61 · Today 07:20

Yes, I do. Not because I'm particularly religious, but becausecI think it's just an essential book to have in a household.... like the Complete Works of Shakespeare (very "Desert Island Discs"!).
Some knowledge of the Bible is important to understand centuries of Western art and culture, so I view it as a reference book, really.

O00ps · Today 07:20

No we don't own any, but I read quite a bit of it as a child (mostly NT).
I think this is the case for many older adults these day. Brought up by parents that had a religious upbringing themselves, but each generation is less and less likely to consider themselves part of a religion, but at the same time hold some core Christian beliefs that have been handed down.

HedgehogShoes · Today 07:20

Several and read it daily. I love the Bible and am very grateful for it.

So you collect them?

No - just a Christian who enjoys reading different translation / versions.
