When I was growing up in the 1980s, I used to go shopping in the town centre with my Gran every Saturday. Amongst our many ports of call, we’d always go to the tripe stall on the fish and meat market to get some tripe for my Grandad.

A whole stall devoted to selling the stomach lining of a cow.

Kids these days will never know of such things. Tripe
is gone, never to come back. I was there, at the end, as it passed into history.

I hated it myself of course - the look, the smell, just… no.

I don't think it's regional. I am a similar age to you and my south-west born and bred mother used to buy it for us in the 70s, convinced it was good for us. So we duly thought it was lovely, not noticing she never ate it herself...
My partner's dad was from a similar area and he also loved it, with vinegar. His later life was in London, where I assume he could also get it.

Where is the butcher?

I could not stand the thought of eating tripe.

Omg I feel sick from the memories 🤢 My Nan loved it, my DF (a butcher) would get her some every week. I feel the same about all offal.

Both my parents grew up very poor, DF and his siblings would have to beg for food, think along the lines of the begging scene in Angela’s Ashes. My Nan tried to get all her sons to be butchers boys, my DF was the only one who stuck at it. He’d get scraps off the butcher, my Nan would use every single scrap of the animal she could. She would tell my DF off for wasting “perfectly good food” when she found out his employers didn’t use every bit of the animal years later.

It’s funny how we all have memories of these days…but wouldn’t act on them now! I remember my mum going on about ‘sugar buttys’ that were apparently THE BEST…but I never saw her make or eat one! 😂

Savoury ducks they were called in my home town and I made them occasionally as part of my first summer job.

Greehalghs Black pudding stall on Bury market sells tripe, my dad who is 95 still buys it from there, together with a fatty black pudding !

Some thing’s actually have changed for the better

My Dad used to make us eat bone marrow. I remember it not being awful? Tripe though. 🤢 and faggots. Omg I hated faggots. Still had to eat them though. It didnt help that if we got "the posh ones" the brand was "Mr Brains". Blggh

I haven't had a faggot for years but used to love them. Mr Brain's faggots aren't posh. I used to get mine from the butchers in the St Nicholas Market in Bristol and they were at least twice the size.

I can’t believe how you all can feed your children without realising supermarket/butchers sausages are encased in animal intestines containing all sorts of waste animal parts as well as burgers made from the least desirable parts of a hind quarter 🤣

You know what’s funny looking back is that there were butchers stalls and fish stalls and then entire stalls dedicated to selling tripe! You wouldn’t think they’d make enough money with one product 🤔

tripe is still served as a delicacy in Madrid. Not an easy eat 😆. It’s their famous dish Callos a la Madrileña.
