To ask how you plan outfits for holiday?

I have a holiday coming up soon and I’m trying to plan some outfits so that I have a somewhat streamlined packing process. But I’m not the best at packing and tend to overpack!

Every time I try to plan outfits I hit roadblocks in terms of “what if I don’t want to wear that?” or “what if the weather isn’t good enough?”, so how do you actually do that? I’ve got a fairly comprehensive wardrobe for summer so just need some help figuring it out now!

For a break somewhere warm?

One clean top per day. If that top is part of a dress that's a whole outfit. Otherwise two tops to one pair of shorts/skirt as they will get at least two wears. 2-3 cardigans in case it gets cool.

Travel in jeans and trainers. Pack one pair of sandals.

Swimming gear.

Job done.

Yes, a hot holiday!

I don’t think I’ll be travelling in jeans purely because I don’t see myself wearing them during the trip, but then I have no idea what to travel in!

What sort of holiday is it? For an overseas / all inclusive type with no access to washing machine I just pack 2 pr shorts, 2 cotton skirts, t shirts and vest tops to cover 1 per day, 4 evening dresses for dinner, 1 travel outfit (wear there and back, with extra T-shirt, undies) underwear, pool wear and I think that is it! If I go to a villa I take less because I can wash stuff.

Whereland · 13/07/2026 07:59

Depends on the type of holiday! City break? Campsite where you won’t care less what you look like?

heydorotheayoullgo · 13/07/2026 08:00

It’s a hot exploring holiday - different day trips everyday, lots of walking

Travel in your trainers/walking shoes as they’ll be bulkier. I’d pack a pair of comfy sandals too. Shorts and light tops, I always stop myself putting in the pretty dress or dressy top cause I just know in a hot climate I want the comfort of floaty shorts and tops

I'm nearly always travelling through UK airport car parks in the cold hours of tje morning so just wear jeans then, get to hotel and change and leave them in a drawer till going home. Then don't need to consider if it's going to be cold at home when I get back either. But then I've never found jeans uncomfortable or unsuitable for flying.

Even easier. Just a selection of shorts, one pair light trousers, variety of tops, one jumper. Wear your proper walking shoes on the plane if it's that much exploring you need them.

MiddleAgedDread · 13/07/2026 08:11

I usually travel in denim shorts, T-shirt and hoodie or fleece and trainers. Or I have a very lightweight pair of trousers if it’s a bit cooler. I wouldn’t take jeans, maybe a pair of linen trousers or similar for evenings or cooler days. Mix n match things are your best option then you only need a cardigan or two to go with evening outfits. I’d take comfy shorts and T-shirts / vest tops for the day and a couple of smarter outfits (dresses or trousers/ skirt and top) for dinner in the evening. Wear your clean top to dinner and then wear it the next day when you’re out n about. Take loads of undies so you can shower before dinner and have clean pants. If you’re doing lots of walking take two pairs of shoes for exploring so you can swap them, it can really help achy feet just to wear different shoes.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/07/2026 08:12

I have just been on that sort of holiday. I travelled in linen trousers, birkenstocks and a t shirt. I took two pairs of shorts (one denim and one black linen) and a coloured/striped t shirt for each day and then a couple of summer dresses and some patterned summer midi/maxi skirts and plain t shirts/vests in black and navy for the evening.

Three days of our holiday were by the sea so I also took a bathing costume and a loose cotton cover up blouse.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/07/2026 08:14

I did not need a jacket or cardie as it was 25 degrees when we left London and 28 when we returned! I did take a long cotton scarf and a thin rain jacket that scrunched up in to a small pouch.

PollyBell · 13/07/2026 08:15

I just pick tops that go with bottoms and wear what I want at the time

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/07/2026 08:49

To note I took more dresses/skirts as the evening parts of our holidays are important - we go to a lot of bars/restaurants etc.. and even gigs/events. if your holiday is more focussed on day time activities you may want to double the amount of shorts and trousers.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/07/2026 09:00

In terms of planning I tend to think - shorts and t shirt for walking/day trips, summer dress for visiting museums/historic sights and top and skirt or dress for evenings and then take a combination of things that will fit those parameters in the amount you need.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 13/07/2026 09:02

I don't really plan outfits. Most of my clothes will mix and match and I just tend to take a certain number of items depending on activities, duration and weather.

sunnydayhereandnow · 13/07/2026 09:11

Remember that when it's hot and you're active, wearing loose clothing and natural fibres makes a huge difference. For daytime on exploring holidays I really prefer "normal" loose crew neck t shirts, where you don't need to worry about sunscreen on your back, shoulders and neckline, and you also don't have to perpetually carry about scarves to cover up, etc. Same for trousers - I actually prefer longer loose cotton trousers rather than shorts, bc then you're protected from the sun and bites, and no issues of needing to cover up for religious sites etc.

JustMyView13 · 13/07/2026 09:29

I lay my outfits out, and photograph them. Then I have a couple of top options to go with the bottom so I can mix & match. Same with shoes. That way you end up with about 10/12 options for 7 days. Also don’t have to think about it much whilst away, just scroll through your camera roll. If you’re going somewhere the temperature dips, take a couple of bits that would warm up your existing outfits. Job done.

Echobelly · 13/07/2026 09:33

Depends on few things - much easier if there's a stable weather forecast which makes it likely it'll be similar weather the whole time. If its warm but might change I'll pack some leggings and maybe tights and cardigans as layers to wear with dresses or skirts. Also depends if I can wash clothes and how quickly I can dry them.

For a week without laundry somewhere hot it'd be something like 3 dresses, 2 shorts, 4 t-shirts, plus some layers for evening. But I do pack fairly light.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/07/2026 11:41

I'm like a stuck record with this, but if you are going somewhere hot and are walking around, take a few Uniqlo Airism cami tips. That way if you sweat those tops absorb it, rather than your t shirt, meaning your t shirt stays fresh for another wear. They also rise out and dry really quickly.

TheCurious0range · 13/07/2026 13:33

I'm packing now for a 14 day trip,.I have 4 pairs of shorts, two knee length cotton skirts, three maxi skirts, 5 cotton dresses that can be for day or casual evening (t-shirt material but wide straps not sleeves), 5 t-shirts, 5 vests. I also have a cropped leg playsuit and a short one, 5/6 dresses for evenings 4 swimming costumes, 4 sets PJs, 28 pairs of knickers (1 day 1 evening) a hoodie, 3 light cardis, a denim jacket and two cover ups. There are probably a few things I've forgotten about. BUT I am an over packer and I cannot rewear something I've sweated in. There are no laundry facilities where we are going.

I will travel in wide leg light trousers a vest and cardigan with sandals.

troothfairy · 13/07/2026 13:36

I only take dresses and sandals/flip flops, aside from the cargos, hoodie and trainers I wear to travel in. A couple of cardigans in case the evenings are chilly. Bikinis. Undies. I’ll wear each dress twice.

heydorotheayoullgo · 13/07/2026 13:41

I think what I’m going to do tomorrow is pull everything out of my wardrobe and start putting together outfits. If the tops don’t match 2 bottoms, I won’t be taking them.

Pick colours where everything goes with everything else. Ditto patterns - like if you've got busy patterned skirts / trousers take plain tops and vice versa.

Proper walking shoes and SOCKS. Nothing wrecks this sort of trip like blisters.
