To ask where would you go in late February if you're broke and want sun?

Ive got a milestone birthday and have decided I would like to take myself off and spend a week doing something ive never done which is a beach holiday. Obviously I've been on holidays that have had some beach action, but I've always had either active or more kind of culture focused holidays. I want to go and spend a week doing the whole all inclusive thing somewhere beautiful where I literally just swim, eat, sleep and reflect on my life choices to date 😂
Its a shame my birthday is in February because Ive never been to Greece and always wanted to go but I think February will be too cold?
My only criteria is:

  • Cheap
  • Not trashy

Ideas???!

Canary Islands? I have a soft spot for Lanzarote.

Waitingfordoggo · 12/07/2026 22:34

Unless you want quite a long flight, Canary Islands or Morocco might be your best bet for warmth and sun at that time of year.

If you’re happy to go further, Thailand/Malaysia/Vietnam spring to mind.

LilyLemonade · 12/07/2026 22:34

Canaries are reasonable cost and very nice.
Egypt could be an option? Though I have not been myself.

LilyLemonade · 12/07/2026 22:35

Do you feel you must do it on the actual date? Greece is absolutely lovely and has idyllic beaches.

youvemadeyourpoint · 12/07/2026 22:38

We went to Cape Verde in February this year and absolutely loved it. Very hot, lots of restaurants within the AI resort and beautiful beach front. Excursions available if you’d like to see the island. Booked through TUI.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePleaseBarista · 12/07/2026 22:42

What sort of budget?

durdledoris · 12/07/2026 22:45

Cyprus

Garfieldloveslasagnepie · 12/07/2026 22:45

Playa blanca in Lanzarote is lovely. Could easily go there alone

Bjorkdidit · 12/07/2026 22:46

Second the suggestion to not do it in late February as it's probably the least reliable month for weather and the sea is the lowest temperature for your best location option, the Canaries. You could get nice weather but it could also be cooler so not sunbathing weather.

What's your budget? If you don't want 'trashy' and like good food, I wouldn't do lower budget AI. Unless you're a big eater and want endless cocktails, it's probably not even the cheapest way to do it either.

I had the type of holiday you're talking about in November and went HB, and only really got HB because it was hardly any more expensive than B&B. AI would have been quite a bit more, so it was cheaper for me to have lunch out each day and then just have a (paid) drink with dinner in the restaurant each night. I stayed in quite a nice 4 star hotel, the food was OK but a bit dull, so I was glad I was getting lunch out each day, so I could have the food I actually wanted to eat.

If you really want to go to Greece, you'd probably be best going in June or September for the best combination of heat and affordability. Or the Canaries in October/November or March to May.

We went to Murcia and it was amazing x

Same! Lanzarote is on my list. I loved Tenerife.

notatinydancer · 12/07/2026 22:47

Morrocco. I’ve been 3 times in feb.

clareykb · 12/07/2026 22:49

We've been to southern Spain Málaga area in late Feb for the past few years.. This year it was pretty warm but last year it rained half the time..bit hit and miss in lots of places I think

KlippityKloppity · 12/07/2026 22:52

Thank you so much for all your great ideas. I'm beginning to think that maybe late February is a really shit time to be trying to do this which is a shame as the idea was to kind of go away and pretend the birthday wasn't happening 😅

You could always wait until a week or two before, check the weather forecast and if it looks nice, see if you can get a late deal?

If the weather looks shit, perhaps look at a few days at a spa in the UK? You still get to relax, read, swim and eat without shivering on a sunbed wishing your birthday was in June instead.

squirrelchops2 · 12/07/2026 23:02

Personally I'd head out to Thailand. OK, dearer to get there than Canaries but accommodation and food will be a lot cheaper so I'd say it would balance out.
I too have Feb birthday but am postponing trip until later in the year.

Don’t fo to Morocco or Egypt alone. Another thread is talking about how many women are getting sexually assaulted.. Tenerife is almost guaranteed sun but it’s not got any culture.. what about Madeira? Funchal isn’t as hot or sunny as Tenerife but it’s much nicer. You could also try the algarve but weather not guaranteed.. You could do a cruise? Sons repositioning ones can be pretty cheap.

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/07/2026 23:34

Avoid half term week. The prices ramp up for all the flights and package holidays.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/07/2026 23:56

Morocco. But not Agadir!

Els1e · 13/07/2026 00:10

Gambia.

Fleetwoodquack · 13/07/2026 00:11

I’ve been to Egypt twice at the end of feb (after half term). It was warm enough to sunbathe and swim but more chilly at night.

PenelopeJoanSterling · 13/07/2026 00:11

for me Alaska
