I'm lying here in a lovely cool room with the curtains closed and the windows open, there is a nice cooling airflow. DH is insisting on closing the window to keep the room cool because he's seen that advice on the TV.

How does closing the window cool the room?
Surely for hundreds of years if your greenhouse was overheating you would open the windows?

The other rooms in our house which have closed windows (it's 6am) are already hot.

Windows open or closed? Please settle the argument.

at 6 a.m. you can open all the windows and hope a breeze springs up. Only close them once the air temperature outside rises to the indoor temperature, then close and pull curtains, etc. As soon as the sun goes down, get ready to open windows again. It's relentless at the mo.

Depends if there is a breeze too, we get a through draft going which really helps

Noo, it doesn’t make any difference to the air temperature. A through draft of air warmer than the air already inside your house will obviously increase the temperature in your house. This is why fans exist; so tgat you can have the movement of thw internal air without bringing hot air into your house by opening windows during the daytime when it’s hotter outside than inside!

It’s amazing that there are people on the thread arguing about this when all that is required to figure it out is the most basic knowledge of physics which everyone is taught at school. It’s blindingly obvious.

Yup. As a PP pointed out, it's not rocket science!

If it's hotter outside keep them closed. If cooler outside open them.
