AIBU to think I might have a nervous breakdown in the jungle

My partner, my kids and I are going away on a bit of an exotic holiday and will be staying, amongst other things, for one week in a small private retreat which is on a jungle island and built quite literally in the middle of the jungle.

It's en eco resort where they don't believe in harsh chemicals (which I agree with) and try to coexist with nature. I came across it because I'm a writer and someone invited me to a writing retreat there, I couldn't go but checked out the place and fell in love with it based on the stunning photos and videos available on the net. It's got amazing Tripadvisor reviews and so I booked the whole thing, not giving much thought to where it's located (I just thought of it as, 'lush vegetation', not 'middle of the tropical rainforest').

Now, it's almost coming up to the trip, I'm starting to seriously panic. It's for the first time sinking in that we are going to be IN the jungle, and while there are some very cool things - monkeys, hornbills, geckos - there are also snakes, spiders, mosquitoes galore, and our accommodation - being based on authentic Malaysian architecture - is kind of like a giant tree house. It's really pretty and artistic, set in 7 acres of jungle with two stunning saltwater swimming pools, but on the website itself - which I have only for the first time read properly this week! - it clearly says if you're scared of the jungle, don't like insects etc, then this is not the place for you.

I've travelled a lot when younger and have hiked through what's called the outer jungle in Peru, but only for one day (didn't spend the night) and wasn't really scared at all, but I worry I'm going to feel completely trapped somewhere where I might just lose my mind if I see a massive spider in my shower or whatever. The retreat is meant to have a 5* service and incredible food made by, essentially, a private chef who cooks for each family individually (there are only 8 rooms) so there's much to look forward to, but I just keep thinking, Jesus we will really be right IN it. Not next to it, not close to it, but INSIDE it. Most of the accommodation is kind of open to the jungle (in the bedrooms, you can close the wooden shutters and turn on the air con, but otherwise the living quarters are very immersed in the rainforest)

I haven't shared my concerns with my kids as I have to model adventure spirit....I wonder if my 15 year old daughter will join me in the nervous breakdown. My partner says we'll be fine, famous last words. The resort has been there since 1996 so they absolutely know what they're doing and in fact it's owned by two Brits who were born in Malaysia and who have been wonderful to deal with (the woman is an artist and this is their former home). And yet, and yet, who's going to save me when I trip over a gigantic tarantula lol.

Any thoughts - anyone on MN, who's a real city person in normal life, gone somewhere like this on holiday and survived the trauma of various exotic fauna :-) ?

Sounds like the film Jodie foster was in!

Malaysia has super sized insects as I discovered when I went to their jungle area. Good luck op.

A jungle is definitely NOT the place to go if you're scared of spiders.
How did you not realise this, OP? 🤔

Calling the staff to remove it does not get over the shock of seeing them.

I can't believe that anybody who is phobic about spiders would book a place like this, no matter how luxurious it is.

OP, no offence, but you've made a really stupid decision here.

Even if they're harmless, they'll give you a shock.

I wouldn't go if it was free!

It's fair to say it's a stupid decision, yes. I think it was a clear case of confirmation bias - because it had been recommended to me as a writing retreat, this subconsciously meant to me that it's a great place, and I only noticed information which confirmed the belief I had already created. I didn't even think to look at anything that might show me the other side of jungle holidays!

The majority of the people who LIVE in the jungle (and you are definitely going jungle lite) do not have glass windows and definitely NOT air con. Get over yourself and enjoy an amazing experience, without bludgeoning every insect or bug in sight, if you can. Maybe try a shower like I did in an eco lodge, unlit except for candle I took (no electricity on site at all) when 'things' are wandering around in the shadows....and probably were just shadows (it was a quick shower - also cold) but that's kind of the deal in a remote location. And if there had been glass in the lodges, we would have fried. Unclench and try to enjoy. It will be amazing !😍😍

Thanks for acknowledging it's the decision I'm calling stupid not you.
As a writer you probably see that, though.

Maybe some phobia treatment if you can't cancel?

I couldn't go there. No matter how luxurious it is. I'd be constantly on the lookout.

No matter how good the staff are, in order to get them to remove them in the first place you still have to see one.

@Writer034 does it have good WiFi? I just got back from taking my 16 and 18-year-olds on a Greece trip (Athens and islands) and all they wanted was the air con and WiFi. 😂 I did manage to drag them out for a bit but did a few things on my own while they slept off the exam stress of last few months. I come from that part of the world and their repellants are best. I have fond memories of my grandma burning those mosquito coils… 😊

DecoratingDiva · 10/07/2026 13:59

You will be in a luxury resort with aircon and staff whose job it is to chase all critters out of the place.
What is there to worry about?

If you were actually camping in the jungle I might have some sympathy but this is more of an “oh poor me, I’m going to a fabulous place, isn’t it terrible”

lordbaddingham · 10/07/2026 14:11

Oh my, googled this place and it looks absolutely idyllic. Going on my bucket list. I am not a spider fan but I actually don't think I would mind so much, you get to see so much wildlife. It will be magical. I have been on a wildlife walk in penang and it was one of the most interesting things I've ever done, this is that on steroids!

Sounds awful. How old are the kids? How long would it take you to get to a hospital if someone caught ill? I don’t stay anywhere more than twenty minutes from a hospital

Crikey, most people live more than that distance away from a hospital!

Weeellokthen · 10/07/2026 14:15

Well jealous.
Relax and enjoy
Give us a post trip thread please

There's temperamental wifi in just one public area. My teenagers will find that a bit of a challenge but I just think they'll swim a lot instead (I hope)

I hope you're right! I hope this is a case of 'spoilt townie doesn't see how lucky she is' rather than 'a mother of two admitted to local hospital after too many critter close encounters on holiday' 😂 I'm not sure I would call the resort luxury. Some things about it are meant to be amazing, such as service and food, the accommodation itself is very much homely, authentic, pretty in an artistic way but it's no Shangri La. But then again I don't know as I haven't been there yet. Maybe I'll go and find there are golden loos everywhere ;-)

At first I thought this post was rage bait, and then I looked at the hotel and confirm it's a hard NO from me, it does indeed look very rustic and a bit too jungle-y 😂

Why did you think it was rage bait, just out of interest? I wouldn't have thought such a long and detailed post would be made up (and what do people gain from posting rage bait anyway?).

I’m not saying it’s normal 😆

We stayed in a jungle lodge in Borneo. It was rough and ready, I wont lie. A lot of the food was foraged and not what we are used to. There were monkeys, lizards etc but they stayed well clear. We covered up dusk till dawn and they provided mosquito nets.

It was BLOODY brilliant. Hope your trip is good too OP.

We stayed in a river lodge in Borneo - when we arrived I was like ‘oh look monkeys how cute’ by the end they were like pigeons…..

My friend lives in the rainforest in Queensland, Australia and has been there for about 20 years. Her house is surrounded and the tree canopy stretches over her outdoor decking and roof. Somehow she doesn't get much in the way of creepy crawlies in her house. I think the air conditioned climate probably isn't very inhospitable for them. They've had a snake in the basement once in twenty years, but the spiders seem to stay outside. I think you'll be fine.

Writer034 · 09/07/2026 15:16

Totally get you - huntsman spiders are my worry too!

I once had one get into my backpack in Australia. I opened the top, looked at her, she looked at me and by the time I'd opened my mouth to yell, she was off. They really are not just lurking ready to get us.

Shinyhappyapple · 10/07/2026 21:31

I hope you have a good time and the spiders stay well away from you OP.

it’s definitely not for me though.
