To go to the zoo with DS?

DS(5) wants to go to the zoo. Our most local one is offering half price entry to children as well as then free return visits for a year. There’s a splash pad and a Gruffalo trail and a soft play so the actual animals seem almost incidental.

However, I’ve only been once before and to be honest had a bit of an uncomfortable feeling about it. I’m not keen on zoos generally but the enclosures for the animals seemed really small and there wasn’t much shade for them or places to retreat to in some cases (kangaroos in tiny bare paddocks was one that really upset me and some zebras in pretty much a field.)

I get that they aren’t reliant on my custom and it makes no difference to them if I go or not, so part of me thinks that ds will enjoy it and just let him have a good day. Or stick to what I’m comfortable with which is not lining their pockets?

I understand your reluctance. It is difficult. I think I would probably go and concentrate on the attractions. If you encounter a setting that you have concerns about explaining this to your son might be tempting as you wish him to grow up as a caring person but might spoil his enjoyment.

Thanks. I don’t think he would understand very well why I have reservations - I’m sure he’ll like the animals but the other attractions will probably interest him just as much if not more, it’s a tough one.

It wasn't great a few years ago, but they seem to have made a bit of effort to improve things and the Gruffalo trail is good.
At age 5 its nice for children to see the animals up close and then as they get older you can discuss the morality of zoos.
If you do decide to go, they have an offer for children to go for a £1 over the holidays..use the code SCHOOLSOUT

Some zoos do more conservation work than others, could you look into that and take him to one you think hits a good balance?

Peak is not bad as wildlife parks and zoos go. That is one place we’ve been to. He’s got his heart set on Twycross because so many of his friends have been.
