Why does everyone say “Job role?”

LegoEmergency · Yesterday 18:28

For some reason I absolutely hate this phrase but seemingly everyone now says it.

I think saying “job role” sounds weird and unnecessary.

You could just use either one of those words “job” or “role” to mean the same thing, so why say both?

(And don’t even get me started on why people say “wash-hand basin when you could just say “wash basin” or “hand basin!”)

You're not wrong.

I’ve never heard anyone say that. But when I do, I will be irritated.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · Yesterday 18:32

I’ve never heard it, but it certainly sounds annoying.

I'm not sure everyone does say either of those things - I'm fairly sure nobody I talk to "in real life" uses either.

I suppose "job role" could be to distinguish from ham role social role (daughter/ sister/ mother/ friend etc )... Why not just job? Specialised role in broader job category? Although it's probably regional... everything is regional...

Does everyone say this? I don't think I do

MathiasBroucek · Yesterday 18:34

I work in HR and it's B's....

IStillHearTheWaves · Yesterday 18:34

Never heard of that.

MyDuvetDay · Yesterday 18:34

i don’t think I’ve heard many or any people say “job role”. Agree it sounds stupid

Gizlotsmum · Yesterday 18:36

It’s something used where I work, it essentially defines what duties/ responsibilities/ areas are part of your job spec and what is expected of you

NuffSaidSam · Yesterday 18:41

I've never heard either of those phrases, but agree that they're both annoying.

I also don't like when someone says '7am in the morning'. Only one or the other is needed!

Ponoka7 · Yesterday 18:46

It should be hand wash basin or sink. It comes from hospitality, were you need a seperate hand washing sink. However with the rise of people wanting more toilets, then it describes the cloakroom sink.
Job role is putting it plainly and it will make sense if put into Google translate. It's a another way of saying job description.

LadyMacbethWasFierce · Yesterday 18:57

I have never seen it written other than here. I agree that it would be very annoying.
