Ok. So not really an AIBU - apart from AIBU to think no one else remembers this.

school years above as not sure which year I was in, I suspect could be 1987-1989.

we did a singing choice type concert with other schools, as in we came together this one night to sing the songs we had learned in our own schools.

i can’t remember if there was any acting, I don’t think so, it was just lots of kids singing songs about history.

The first song I remember was about sir Walter Raleigh and some of the lyrics might be:

oh dear sir Walter Raleigh, we’re down here on our knees, we know you won’t be round yet for 8 more centuries, but from this feast is missing CHIPS just slightly greasy soooo let King Arthur have his spuds and forget your history eee eee forget your history - yeh!

then there was one about Guinevere - like a ballad. I think the whole thing was about the life of King Arthur, I’ve reached the lyrics and all over the internet but can’t find anything on a sung play in the 80’s - does one remember this, I went to school in the north east of England.

thanks!

I left year 11 in 1987 (back then it was called 5th year seniors)
I don’t have any memory of a singing concert, I was brought up in the Midlands

Was it a local
thing ?
I went to seconadary school from 1985-1990 and dont remember anything like that maybe it was specific to your LEA?

Nowadays they have singing concerts nationally called Young Voices.

When I was at school we learned a set of songs that sound similar to what you describe - one featured Henry VIII and the refrain was “I’m ‘Enery the Eighth I am, ‘Enery the 8th I am I am. I got married to the widow next door. She’d been married 7 times before! Every one was an ‘Enery. She wouldn’t have a Willie or a Sam..”

Then “After the ball was over/ She took out her glass eye.”’

Both of those are fairly well-known music hall songs, though.

I think OP is probably talking about something specifically written for schools. We did a few of them in the 80s - I’m a bit younger, so it would have been primary rather than secondary, and we didn’t do that one but I recognise the type.

I’m older, but back in the 70s we did one about Jonah and the Whale that had songs in the same vein.

There’s a whole old thread about random musicals / songs from school - see if anyone on that mentioned it?

There were bbc plays / musicals written for schools. I remember one about William the conqueror and one about brier rabbit. They had some great tunes.

When Jonah went into the whale/he closed his eyes and prayed/Oh Lord I'm very sorry that your word I've disobeyed/If you will only come and save me I will do as you command/Instead of treading water let me tread upon the sand...

Why yes I do remember ALL of it 😂😂😂
