AIBU to apply for another internal role while awaiting a potential one?

I work for a large organisation, been there four years but have outgrown my current position.
I identified a problem with the way things currently work and took the opportunity to speak to the most senior executive of our department when our paths crossed. We had a very brief chat, I told him the issue and put myself forward to solve it, it would be a new job/role in the company. He sounded keen, said we would discuss it but he is away for a while.
Now, in a totally different department (same organisation) another job is being advertised. Really interesting, I would say it would be ideal for me….had I not set my heart on the new role, which is even more perfect.
If I apply for the second role, does it look bad? I don’t want to waste anyone’s time.
But if I don’t apply, and the first one comes to nothing, it’s a wasted opportunity.
Or should I apply, and email the boss saying I am still 100% committed to the first role but am applying for the second in case the first doesn’t come off???
The application date for the second one is in a few days. He won’t be back by then.
YABU apply for both
YANBU don’t apply for the second, show your commitment to the first idea.

I can't see that there actually is a first job available though. How do you know he's not just bullshitting you?

Fair! I don’t know him at all, he’s my boss’s boss’s boss’s boss. He could be a complete blagger for all I know!
I will apply for the second, thanks 👍

I mean I'd hate to think you would put off applying for the 2nd (real) job based on a corridor conversation with someone 4 levels up who you've told you can solve a certain problem and you think he'll make a whole new job for you?
