To send a close friend a small cat ornament when she has lost her precious cat?

Just that really, she recently lost her lovely but very old cat who she was devoted to. I saw a little cat ornament and bought it to send but have been told this could be 'mean'. I don't think she would take it that way, what do you think?

I lost my beloved grey boy cat a few weeks ago and I would love this, it shows that you care and also something to remember them by. But I like ornaments and gifts and thoughtful gestures, even if it wasn’t to my taste I would put it next to the photo I have framed of my cat and feel grateful for a lovely friend.

I have had cats since I was a child, so have navigated the loss of beloved fur babies over the years, and unfortunately very recently too. I would think this is a lovely gesture and would be really touched if I received such a thoughtful gift from a close friend x

Fur babies 🤮

@38woman I think it’s a lovely gesture. When my sweet dog passed my friends did something similar and I was so grateful.

Does she like ornaments? Otherwise, together with a nice message, it's clearly a thoughtful gesture. Someone would have to be pre disposed to misery to think a good friend is doing that to be mean.

Harassedmum123 · 03/07/2026 20:53

Such a lovely idea OP. I must admit I prefer the pebble that @NotInMyyNamejust posted but either way it’s such a kind gesture.

People are just so different, I’d be so touched by this xx

Hopefulsalmon · 03/07/2026 21:04

I would be pleased to receive this, it's a lovely way of acknowledging her loss.

I’ve just lost a pet and I’d hate this. Depends on the person. I’ve appreciated the cards and flowers because I will be able to get rid of them soon.

It would upset me at the moment, I would think I don’t want an ornament of my pet I want my pet and I am heartbroken that they are gone. I am upset by being given something to remember them by. I don’t want to remember I want to forget. I want to remember in my own way when I am ready. I have of course graciously thanked the giver and do very much appreciate that it was very kindly meant.

So if you do give your cat ornament make it clear that you don’t know if it will be what they want and give them permission to pass it on to a charity shop if it’s not their thing atm.

TooOrangey · 03/07/2026 21:07

It’s a kind thought, but is she an ornament person? I don’t know a single one, even old ladies. I’d rather flowers or a plant for the garden.

Diorama2 · 03/07/2026 21:13

Im also not a fan of plants for the garden I’m afraid. I might buy my own plant in time but atm it’s too raw and I’d have to be watering it all the time in the heatwave. Then it might die and I’d feel guilty. Flowers and a card much broader appeal , but you know your friend.

Ladybird69 · 03/07/2026 21:19

I have had good friends do this for me so I think it’s lovely but would just say to wait a couple of weeks before you do so as it’s not still raw. Bless you for being a good friend x

I'd send a card. The pebble was also thoughtful. I'd not want a cat ornament unless it looked exactly like my cat.
