Cub scouts wearing jumpers in hot weather

Is it normal practice for cubs/scouts to have to wear jumpers even during hot weather? Everyone in my sons pack own the polo shirts and I know they’re not official uniform but it just seems bonkers in hot weather to have to wear the jumper.

It’s really warm and sunny where I am this evening, the cub group have gone on a hike and have to wear their jumpers. I understand the discipline of wearing a uniform but surely the polo shirt and necker would be a reasonable compromise in warmer weather? I asked but the leader said definitely not, it has to be full uniform aka jumpers. Is this a standard rule in scouting?

Last summer one of the cubs got heat stroke and was physically sick from having to wear his jumper on a hot sunny day during an outdoor activity.

Inappropriate clothing is a safeguarding issue, I doubt it's a scouting policy.

That's definitely something you need to raise with the leader or commissioner if you dont get an appropriate response (not sure of their actual name as I'm a Guide leader not Scouts) It might be that they wanted them to be easy to spot as a group in a public place etc but neckers would have been sufficient.

Ours wear their polos in the summer.

Throwaway380 · 03/07/2026 07:30

Ours might put jumpers on for someone being invested etc so that’s smart, but for something like a hike absolutely not. Also even for something formal they would just put it on for the actual ceremony and the sort of temps we’ve been having not sure they’d force it. My DD is now in Scouts but they have been non uniform for a few weeks due to heat/activities they’ve been doing.

It's absolutely ridiculous for anyone wearing any kind of uniform not to be able to wear a weather appropriate version of it. What is wrong with these people? I would just skip the activity if the leaders are going to be twats about it.

If the leaders are saying that they HAVE to wear their jumper during hot weather then that is an absolute red flag as it shows they have no understanding of keeping children safe and looked after.
Our unit have pack t-shirts that they wear but if they don’t have them they can wear any t-shirt. Also they would usually wear a scarf but again not enforced in the hot weather.

They are being ridiculous. DS went on a hike with his Cubs a couple of weeks ago, the only uniform requirement was the necker due to the heat, although most wore polos. DS hasn’t worn his jumper for weeks, didn’t even wear it to get invested due to the heat. Find out who the group lead volunteer is and have a word with them.

EmpressaurusKitty · 03/07/2026 07:59

Is this leader wearing a jumper too? Because if he’s in something more comfortable, I’d have thought that was another argument.

Gertrudejekyll23 · 03/07/2026 20:35

Ok I wasn’t sure if it were a standard slightly insane thing that was a rule throughout all cub packs.

The leaders were in shirts with short sleeves. My son had a good time but came back drenched in sweat 🙄

I will push back on it as again it just seems bonkers they’d risk losing members over it.

’Baghera’ told me in no uncertain terms yesterday the polo isn’t official uniform so a jumper must be worn. She is ‘Akela’s’ wife so I don’t think I’ll get a diff answer from him.
For normal pack meetings they can wear the polo shirt under the jumper and take off the jumper after the meeting opening ceremony and need to put it back on again at the end. Parades etc require jumpers regardless of the temps.

Mine dont.
We even loaned out some polo shirts for the ones without them for an event last week as I was not having them in jumpers!

Its against the hot weather guidance

birdling · 04/07/2026 09:10

I was under the impression that the official polo shirts are uniform for cubs.
Scouts is different, as there is only a long sleeved (rather thick) shirt.

This stance from the leaders is ridiculous. I would enquire higher up as it is not good for the children to be in this situation.
I'm a leader in girlguiding, and would put the safety and comfort of the girls before anything else, as would most leaders.

Have these leaders been doing it for a very long time and are perhaps stuck in the 'olden days'?

toastandegg · 04/07/2026 10:02

Ours have separate’pack’ t-shirts for summer activities- even the scout explorers (older dc) have an activity t-shirt for the district as the shirts are quite thick
