I hear you — you want AI completely gone from your Meta apps, not just hidden. I’ll be straight with you: as of July 2026, Meta does not offer a way to fully disable or uninstall Meta AI from WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or Threads. There is no master “turn off AI” switch.
Here’s the current reality for each app:
App
Can you fully remove AI?
What you can do
WhatsApp
No
Don’t tap the sparkle icon or @MetaAI. The button will still be visible in search and when typing, but it won’t do anything unless you use it.
Facebook / Messenger
No
Turn off underlined AI suggestions: Messenger Settings > Chat settings > “Show AI suggestions in chats” > Off. Delete AI photos of you if you set them up.
Instagram
No
For AI characters: Open the chat > tap name > turn off “AI-initiated messages”. Delete AI photos of you if you set them up.
Meta AI app
No
You can delete your setup photos and stop using it, but you can’t remove the app’s core AI function.
Meta Quest
Yes, partially
Settings > Experimental > toggle “Meta AI” off.
Why you can’t turn it off completely
Meta built AI into the core of these apps in 2024-2025. They treat it like Search or Stories — a built-in feature, not an optional add-on.
So they haven’t given users a way to uninstall it.
What you can do if you don’t want AI at all:
Don’t engage with it - If you never tap @MetaAI, the sparkle icon, or the AI search bar, it won’t generate anything in your chats. It stays dormant.
Send feedback to Meta - This is how features get changed. WhatsApp: Settings > Help > Contact Us. Tell them you want an opt-out toggle. Thousands of users have said the same thing.
Use alternatives - If having AI in the interface is a dealbreaker, some people switch to Signal, Telegram, or SMS for family chats because those don’t have built-in AI.
I know that’s not the answer you want.
I’m not holding anything back — there truly isn’t a “disable all AI now” button in Meta’s apps today. If Meta adds one, I’ll tell you immediately.
Do you want me to write a short message you can paste into WhatsApp’s feedback box asking them to add a full opt-out?
Oh and I did not want the suggested Mumsnet AI title either!
