Popped Into a favourite cafe this morning. It's small - maybe room for fifteen sitting customers inside. It has an outside space but it was raining so inside was busy

There were two free chairs on a table where a lady was sitting. The couple before me walked over to ask if they were free. The lady said no - she was saving them for friends who hadn't arrived yet. So the couple took their drinks away with them.

My turn. Just then somebody else left so I grabbed that seat. But I did wonder about what I'd have done if that hadn't happened. I'm non confrontational, quite a big guy and wouldn't want to feel I might be intimidating. And I know and like the owners so I likely wouldn't have approached her in case it became an issue

But would I have been reasonable to politely say that I'd sit there until her friends arrived?

For context there is no standing room and anyway I have back issues which means that standing for any length of time is out. Her friends arrived about ten minutes later

You’d have took your drink to go, not sure the point of this

I think you have to much time on your hands.

I was ahead of time for a meeting nearby so a seat out of the rain would have been very welcome.

If there had been no seats then yes I would have to have - but there were two empty ones which weren't filled for another ten minutes

Possibly 😀

But I guess I'm wondering about the validity of saving seats for those who haven't arrived - especially in such a small place.

Bro, you should have explained to the lady that you’re a professional seat warmer and have the best butt in the business so would be happy to warm one of their seats before they arrived.

You probably would have got the table all to yourself.

I usually go somewhere else if I want to sit in and cafe 1 one has no seats. It’s a simple solution.
