I want a nice space I can sit and read in during summer or at night
Ive made this space, but feel like it needs more?

Any ideas? What would you do with it?

Big plants, and storage units for tongs, fire pit tools, charcoal, firelighters, and separately, cushions etc,

A nice water feature. Lovely space op.

Are you in the UK OP? I can see banana trees in the background. Is this on the ground floor or a balcony/first floor level?

If first floor, I'd check if there are any weight limitations. I agree larger pots/taller trees are needed, but they can be incredibly heavy. Is there a tap there? If not, get a water butt. I'd also want shade! I personally can't sit in full sun for any length of time, plus if reading, it can make it glary.

I think it's a lovely start but you just need to think height and clusters instead of a row of stuff.

Keep an eye on marketplace / freecycle / whatever is used most where you are. A trellis wouldn't be too expensive to break up all that white wall.

Yves St Laurent blue. There is an amazing garden in Marrakech.

I think it looks cluttered and bitty ... sorry. It needs fewer plant bit big statement ones.

outerspacepotato · 30/06/2026 13:15

An umbrella.

A hammock.

A trellis and some passion fruit and Star Jasmine.

A fountain. You can use a cheap birdbath and a solar fountain and expand to a bigger one when funds permit.

Group your small plants on a stand or something.

HollyhockDays · 30/06/2026 13:32

Bigger pots / varying sizes planted with a mix of plants. I do:
thriller - something eye catching
filler - ones for the gaps
spiller - ones that hang over the sides.

Cluttered? I think it’s tbe opposite? Too bare? I don’t want too much there but a bit more

It manages to be both at the moment -- it that line of little bitty plants, candles and lanterns all the same level against the bare wall. Bigger plants and/or climbers, and grouping your light sources will change that.

YSL blue wall

My massive once-ugly garage is YSL blue. It looks fab.

Dontswearjerry · 30/06/2026 14:06

I think it needs a more few bits with height like large lanterns and trees in pots. I would also mix things up as everything is squished to one side at the moment. Plants all on one side and seats all on one side. I would move the rug and table into the centre and add a few bits to the walls. It does look like a great space though and I like what you have done so far.

BauhausOfEliott · 30/06/2026 15:03

Agree with PPs that some bigger / more varied plants, including a tree in a planter, would be nice. I'd also add a bird bath and/or feeder. Maybe some of of wire trellis on the wall that you could use for a climbing plant?

Honeysuckle would be nice, as it smells absolutely gorgeous in the evenings when it's flowering.
