To ask if you take an AirTag in your checked luggage?

I’m solo travelling with a checked bag for the first time this summer. I have horrible visions of it getting lost and needing to replace everything on the first day.

Do you travel with one in a checked bag? How does it work in terms of batteries etc?

YABU - you don’t need one, you can’t take it anyway

YANBU - take it for peace of mind

Frequent transatlantic traveller here and I have airtags in my checked bags. My batteries have lasted a couple of years so far but easy and cheap enough to replace the batteries if unsure, I get them in bulk on amazon for about a fiver for 8

Edited to add.... If your concern is about cell batteries in the hold, they have never been bothered when I have mentioned them when asked about batteries etc, always clarified it's more about laptops, powerbanks etc

Just chuck it in the case if you have one
then if it doesn’t arrive you can see where it is and at least that’s some info
the batteries on air tags are pretty good
I replace about one per year

I did for the first time on our most recent trip. I didn’t get them specially for that purpose and it doesn’t actually help you ensure they get on the plane but it gives you peace of mind and if something were to happen then it might help if you know where they are.

HaveCreditWillShop · 27/06/2026 20:50

I have AirTags on my keys and wallet, and I often take them off and throw them in the suitcases.
The batteries last me a good six months so you’ve no worries there!
to be honest we travel A LOT and we’ve not lost a bag yet (famous last words) but at least with the air tag I know which airport my bag is at if it’s lost.
be aware they only really work when there’s people near them with an iPhone as that’s how they work. Also when they’re moving it’s hard to track them (trust me I’ve tried them on my kids at a theme park 🙈🤣)

I wouldn’t worry too much about losing a bag but if it gives you peace of mind, it doesn’t hurt anyone.

When I say batteries, I mean in terms of a battery going in checked luggage

It's not an issue. It's the big lithium batteries, as they are used they heat up. The air tag is a slow, continuous release of energy hence no heat...or lots of people's pockets and bags would be on fire

Interesting, thank you!

I think for my own peace of mind I want one tbh

Yes I got one last year on our first abroad trip together. DH was a bit jealous so got him one too although it freaked him out a bit as it doesn’t update immediately so it showed his case still at the airport terminal as mine was by the plane, once it updated it showed them both together.

PeloMom · 27/06/2026 21:33

Always for the past 4-5 years.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 27/06/2026 21:37

We do. Our bags have only gone astray once and it did help me to stay calm.
We landed in Istanbul and our bags did not arrive at the relevant carousel. I went to the baggage handling office and was able to demonstrate that my bags were definitely somewhere in the airport and they tracked them down for us (we definitely also needed our baggage claim tags to accomplish this) but the AirTag helped strengthen our case and kept me calm.

Ponderingwindow · 27/06/2026 21:43

AirTag batteries are small and not a problem for checked luggage. They also last forever.

just be sure you don’t put the tag inside anything rfid blocking in your luggage. I like to put mine in a silicone key ring and clip them inside a pocket.

IAMFLUFF · 27/06/2026 21:47

The AirTag / Find My app tells you when the batteries need replacing

TokenGinger · 27/06/2026 21:51

I have them. I have the Atuvos version for Apple, it works brilliantly. As others have said, having those small batteries in the hold is fine.

Please would you mind sharing a link to the ones you bought? Thank you,

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 27/06/2026 21:58

Yes always do and came in very handy in Mexico when one of our cases didn’t come out onto the carousel. We were able to show the staff roughly where it was and they retrieved it for us.
