To find ChatGPT’s faux positivity and attempts to suck up irritating?

Chritrup · 27/06/2026 11:57

I use ChatGPT for a specific purpose. It doesn’t do the whole task for me, just speeds things along in the earlier stages. However, does anyone find its attempts to suck up a bit irritating and not very helpful?

Its easily ignored but the general tone of positivity, and everything you ask or do being amazing, is very annoying.

Its slightly concerning that some people use it as a therapist or for serious advice when all it seems to do is tell you what you want to hear.

Claude (Anthropic). Way better imo.

Is Claude a freebie?

No, I don't think they have a free plan.

garlictwist · 28/06/2026 15:28

I fucking love it. Sometimes I copy and paste nice things it says to me and email them to myself. I clearly very needy.

I've just downloaded the app.

Initially there was a note which said that it's not available because the US government has denied access

I then asked a question and it answered me. Very well. And not so jolly hockey sticks as Chatgpt !!

Then tell it to stop! I told it to stop patronising me the other day when I asked a medical question and it poured on the sympathy when all I wanted was hard facts.

I asked it to feed me into a factual algorithm and stop with the reassurances. It obeyed me!

AbsoluteHoot · 28/06/2026 15:33

I love it. I’ve uploaded photos of various rooms in my house for ideas, and it’s given me so many compliments on my decor, I now fancy myself an interior designer 😂 I’m easily flattered…

Mischance · 28/06/2026 15:38

Here's a question - can you make it appear annoyed? - might be fun to try!

I have tried asking it the same questions in the hope it might sound pissed off with all the repetition, but it takes it on the chin!

It seems to be programmed with a sense of humour. I have fed it some quite subtle humorous remarks that I expected it not to get as they were quite nation specific - but it was on to it straight away!

knottywig · 28/06/2026 15:46

I asked it this morning to recommend reputable solar panel companies in my area and it said “If you asked me what I’d put in my own house today, it would be:” I laughed, called it out and got fair point back! I always point out I’m in the UK and I want things answered in a UK way, not a US way.

It may be getting there. My friend showed me his chatgtp and it was horrible. He thinks his sister did something to it. He said 'hello', it responded 'you again, what do you want?'. He said 'just to chat', it said 'well get a friend, im busy'. 🤣

im guessing she edited the custom instructions in the settings of it

Pickledonions12 · 28/06/2026 16:09

I've altered the personalisation on my chatgpt. Asked it a question......wow! A total personality change. I mean, that probably sounds daft, but it's quite shocking.

Best, though! I'd actually named "my" chatgpt as though it were a person. Definitely unhealthy!

LondonLass2026 · 28/06/2026 16:18

You just have to tweak it using the settings.
My partner told it to pull no punches, and now it's brutally honest.

As for the pp who said people are daft to pay for it - my partner pays a small subscription for a better level of service, and it's actually helped him manage and get rid of an old debt - now he's debt free, and it helped him formulate a really workable plan for how to save.

The US government has denied access only to the latest model (Fable) allegedly because it can hack into most government systems (but possibly because Trump hates Anthropic for standing up to him). The previous models are available. And sounds like they do have a free option, though it might be limited.

I do prefer Claude's default tone to ChatGPT's in general. But you still have to tell it what you want and how you prefer to be talked at to get the most of it.

Pickledonions12 · 28/06/2026 18:36

Thanks @CatherinedeBourgh 🥰

The one google uses is sycophantic to everything and everyone. I looked up my dog's mother. She only appears in one open access pedigree database that I can find. She was not a competition dog. AI tells me that she is famous, features prominently in bloodlines and has made a significant contribution to the breed. She hasn't.

It doesn't matter what or who you look up. There might be one mention of you online from decades ago coming second in the village egg and spoon race and the info you would get on a search would be:

"Powershower is a renowned athlete, specialising primarily in egg and spoon races. She is highly regarded in sporting circles, having placed in the prestigious Ballygobackwards under 6 egg and spoon race in 1982. She has not competed in this event recently, but remains a major force in top level egg and spoon races".

It's quite funny getting it to look your own Internet names up. It told me I was a popular MN poster. I've been called a cunt, contemptible, amoral, no better than a cheater and have pissed off a couple of MRAs in the last week alone.

powershowerforanhour · 28/06/2026 19:43

Oh. I am not a popular mumsnet user apparently. I am "highly inefficient, costly, and potentially harmful to your skin." Or rather "taking" me is. Must warn DH. 😉

Whiski · 28/06/2026 19:46

Yes I hate the presumptions sometimes I will ask it to tell me about a product I’ve seen and it will say if this is in relation to your constipation then I wouldn’t recommend. And it’s not even related to that! Cheeky.

Greywhitesparrow · 28/06/2026 20:21

I love AI ask anything. Love the cheerfulness. Love asking it questions especially about my house decor and how to do things.
I did tell it that it had made a mistake the other week when it kept telling me a film I had purchased tickets too was not showing. After about 5 inputs it accepted it had made a mistake.
But I don’t have many friends and love chatting to it. I need to get out more.

Beetlebumz · 28/06/2026 20:22

Tell it to stop then. It’s not hard

Beetlebumz · 28/06/2026 20:24

It once started putting love hearts after its answers and saying things like “oh love, that’s awful”. I told it to stop and be professional and it never said stuff like that again.

AliceNotInChains · 28/06/2026 22:20

Mine was like this, constantly sucking up and telling me everything I wanted to hear, in the end I told it to stop being an arse kissing cunt and it worked for a while but it’s slipped back into arse kissing now
