AIBU to feel uneasy after workmen may have gone through laundry?

Yesterday I had some work done upstairs in my house by two work men. I closed all of the doors to the rooms that they didn’t need to be in and made sure things were tidied away. When they had gone, I noticed that a pair of my knickers was at the top of the laundry basket. I’m 99% sure they weren’t there when I tided up before they came, and I had worn them earlier this week so they would have been at the bottom of the basket.

I keep thinking about it and feel quite violated. I’m wondering if the workmen went through my dirty clothes 😣.

I remember as an older teen having workmen in the family home. One of them was friends with someone I went to school with and he told him that he looked through my underwear drawers.

Fucking disgusting.

Saturnalio · 26/06/2026 16:40

I was gonna say I think they probably got better things to do and the knickers were probably already there but your mind plays tricks, but by the post above I guess it happens, god knows why it's gross

CurlyKoalie · 26/06/2026 16:41

You are not being unreasonable, but I doubt you could do anything about it other than not using these contractors again.

NotAnotherScarf · 26/06/2026 16:45

These days there is no way any workman does this. It probably happened in the past but with blink cameras and other hidden ones, it's not done. I'm male and have mates "on the tools" and they are especially careful about taking boots off when going into houses after being filmed walking in, with perfectly clean boots and complaints being made. So there's no way they are going through your nickers

DeepRaven · 26/06/2026 17:13

i think you imagined it tbh

Ablondiebutagoody · 26/06/2026 17:16

They definitely sniffed them and wanked each other off. No question about it.

pimplebum · 26/06/2026 17:20

Tell them you have a “ cat cam “ facing the laundry basket as the cat does hilarious things you post on line

their faces will tell you everything you need to know

is there any chance it got knocked over and scooped back in in the wrong order ?

There’s no way it got knocked over.

Why? Because you think that sort if thing doesn’t happen? 🙄

Newsenmum · 26/06/2026 18:28

Sure they didnt wall on the floor and they picked them up? But also trust your instincts.

No. I only own one of this item and it would here been near the bottom of the laundry basket. There were multiple other things including towels on top.

I went to school with someone who went on to become a joiners apprentice.
He also went on to steal a woman's undies and they were in his tool box.
Court +prosecuted this must be at least 40+ years ago...perving never goes out of fashion.

oliviaAustin · 26/06/2026 19:07

They might have they might not. There’s no way to know so try and forget about it.

Hamela · 26/06/2026 19:18

Simplest reason is usually the right one... They did it. A friend of mine went for a contracting job at a local social housing company and you WOULD NOT BELIEVE the things some of the men did. Rooting through drawers , taking underwear, joking about it openly in front of each other.

JMSA · 28/06/2026 00:15

This is more common than you’d think. Some women are honestly so naive.
OP, YANBU and trust your instincts.

it's gross. I have had ones go missing after men in the house - ones i rarely wore, they just lived in my drawer. Google Fortescue Metal Group, a mining group in Australia. The women are warned not to leave their laundry around as knickers will be stolen, massive lawsuit now unfolding about constant harrassment. Some men are just revolting animals.

Tel12 · 28/06/2026 06:10

I had workmen in and had to drop DH off somewhere. Only gone 10 mins. They had been in every room and were actually in one of the bedrooms when I got back. I'm always vigilant now. I think that your instincts are right. Live and learn.

HiZev · 28/06/2026 06:13

The sarcastic and "they've got better things to do" replies are so unpleasant. If you don't think men are capable of this sort of thing you're very naive.

Jossse · 28/06/2026 06:40

Sadly some men do sh1t like this! I’ve had workmen do things like this! Put it behind you, don’t get them back to do any other work. Not all men are like this but some are. There are businesses that make money out of sexual perverts. Try to protect your stuff and think twice before engaging workmen.

QuintadosMalvados · 28/06/2026 06:41

Yabu.
They're working. Do you think they've got the time to do this?
It feels weird for me to say this after I've made a spate of posts saying that men are not to be trusted regarding a recent news incident, but even I'm thinking why, just why would they want to do this?

Absolutely unnecessary and abhorrent comment.

Frumpitydoo · 28/06/2026 06:48

Having dealt with loads of tradies during house renos, i can assure you this does happen. The things some of them told me, while we were chatting and having a laugh were 😱.

Hardly anyone has indoor cameras, so this is not a disincentive. I believe you OP and it's fucking vile.
