Aibu to overthink random toothbrushes in boyfriends?

Is this strange? I haven’t been at my partners house in 6 days but like 2 spare tooth brushes have appeared ?? There was always only 2 me and his now there’s another 2 spare ones right beside ours im thinkin whose are they 🤣 I said to him oh what ones mine again and he was like you can use the purple one I just have spare ones ? Surely if they were spare you would keep them away? Theres now 4 in total out but only he lives here. He just has a son that comes and stays once a week

A grown man who doesn't use an electric toothbrush would be enough to question his dedication to adulthood. Does he floss and TP?

But maybe he has friends staying over/randomly crashing so has spares for that? But you'd think they'd be in a sealed packet.

Did they look used?

None of it seems that normal when I think of it. Unless he's very young and lives in a party house.

A grown man who doesn't use an electric toothbrush would be enough to question his dedication to adulthood.

What an odd thing to say.

FrostyPalms · 26/06/2026 16:04

I think the toothbrushes are the least of your problems if you're questioning it to this degree. Obviously you don't trust him, so I think you should end the relationship at this point.

It was partly meant as a joke but why is it odd to think most adults (should) use an electric toothbrush in the developed world?

he has 2 other women on the go, and they both have great teeth.

Yeah but I just wonder why there’s 4 sittin out when there’s only 3 of us

We seem to have 2 each in each bathroom at the moment.. so 8 for only 2 of us.
If there's nothing else I wouldn't dwell on this.

peachyhead · 26/06/2026 20:28

I have a few random toothbrushes knocking around from friends/family who have spontaneously stayed over. It’s probably nothing, not worth getting upset over.

Lemonymint · 26/06/2026 20:49

Honestly, the only multiple toothbrush scenario I have heard was exactly what you might think. A colleague over drinks was regaling us about his female flatmate's multiple "friends". One of them noticed the multiple toothbrushes and my colleague, who was himself a notorious cheat, manfully claimed he had three toothbrushes!

Eh? I'm a grown man who's never had an electric toothbrush.

Never had to have any work done on my teeth, they're perfect. (Well, almost. I went through a bit of a pen chewing phase and chipped one of them)

It's perfectly possible to look after your teeth without having yet another device that needs charging.

Since you are a man is this normal behaviour to randomly open spare toothbrushes and lay them out ?

See no one else ever stays over with him apart from his son

No. I did however get a bollocking from DP a few months ago because I had 4 different sets of nail clippers lying around the house, because I have a habit of not taking them on holiday with me and having to buy new ones while away, which then get added to the collection at home.

To be honest, I do think you're being a bit paranoid about the toothbrushes. He's probably just bought a pack of 4, opened them to use one himself, left one for his son and left the other two on the side thinking "Need to find a home for them at some point.". I'd actually lean towards extra toothbrushes being a sign that he's not cheating on you rather than he is.

A man who's cheating sees them on the side and thinks "Better put them away before questions get asked". A man who's not cheatings eyes just slide right over them, because theyre not important right now.

Trust your gut, OP. This guy obviously has a coterie of multiple women on the go who leave their toothbrushes in his place at all times, and he's too lazy or arrogant to hide them. Only possible explanation.

Oh grief. I have just been and checked and there are 7 toothbrushes in the bathroom; only 4 of us live here and 2 have electric toothbrushes.

In case you are interested

  • 2 are mine (one is an old one I have not yet managed to put in the cleaning cupboard which is where old toothbrushes go);

1 is DH's who normally uses an electric but the manual is for when he travels;

2 are DS's because he asked me about 3 weeks ago if we had any spare toothbrushes so I got him one out the cupboard but he still seems to be using his old one; and

2 are DD's (she normally uses an electric but doesn't bother to bring it home from uni when she visits so she got herself a manual toothbrush which she then stupidly took back to uni necessitating the buying of yet another toothbrush when she came back the next time; but now she is home for the summer they have all come back again).

I think it's way more likely he bought a multi pack and put them all out then he had 2 different women requiring 2 different extra toothbrushes round and wasn't bright enough to hid any of them ...

Well there’s only me and my boyfriend who stays and we have our own electric toothbrushes. However, if my nephew stays or his family do and they’ve forgotten their toothbrushes then I do have spares (in plastic packs). In fact they were round just now and I gave them the green kids bubble bath, kids shampoo/body wash and 2 kids toothpastes that I have as the boys don’t stay here much now. No strange reason, the baby is too young and the eldest doesn’t like to sleep on his own. I gave them the bath stuff as the baby (toddler) has been refusing baths and showers recently.

Oh fgs either you trust this man or you don’t. As pp said you’re 6 months in, so you should know which it is or isn’t.

Yeah but the bad thing is I know for a fact he never has anyone stay over he doesn’t really have any family so no one stays over apart from his son and they just randomly appeared when I wasn’t at his house all week. But one is definitly not used and he used the other new one but why would he not bin the old ones

I had this. A pink one suddenly appeared. The next time it had been hidden in the bathroom cabinet. Turns out it belonged to his longterm girlfriend and he’d just forgotten to hide it on that occasion…..

Be careful to use only the ones he suggests. Toothbrushes are very good for close cleaning jobs like getting into the ridges of taps... does this sound like him?

Leave a hair elastic in his car passenger seat mirror and see if it’s still there when you’re next in the car

I honestly have no idea how he hasn't ran a mile yet.
