Neighbours smoking weed

CocoBean22 · 25/06/2026 21:34

We’ve new neighbours moved next door to us who are lovey hard working and polite people, a nice family who we have got on well with since moving in.
We’ve noticed they smoke weed in the garden.
It’s not bothering us to be honest, but a family member said ‘oh I would be putting up with that I’d report them’
Its harmless enough and not really affecting us so my question is would you be bothered or not?

Report them to who?

Heidi2018 · 25/06/2026 21:38

Why would you report them if it's not bothering you? Id probably be a bit miffed by the smell but still wouldn't be bothered doing anything about it!

GreatThingsAwait · 25/06/2026 21:39

It wouldn’t bother me from a moral/legal view but I’d hate to have to put up with the revolting vomit’y smell

ThisGladGoose · 25/06/2026 21:54

What people do in their own garden is their own business, so no I wouldn't report them and I seriously doubt the police would take any kind of interest if you did.

Bumbelinaaa · 25/06/2026 22:20

Wouldn’t bother me personally.

If you think it’s fine, then stand by that. You don’t need other people to validate your opinion just because a relative disagrees! Trust your own judgement.

My neighbour, who is lovely, smokes weed in his garden most days. I really don’t know why anyone would have a problem with someone doing it. If it’s accompanied by antisocial behaviour then obviously that’s different, but other than an occasional waft of cannabis smell now and again, which is a fleeting thing and probably less intrusive than the smell of cigarettes or vapes, what is there to be bothered about?

Owenspannas · 26/06/2026 00:03

My neighbour seems to smoke weed continuously. It stinks and I hate it but I don’t think they’re actually doing anything wrong so there’s no one to make a report to

TinyTempest · 26/06/2026 00:05

Weed stinks but your family member is deluded if they think the police are going to be interested in someone smoking a few joints in their garden.

I wouldn’t be happy if my kids were playing and the smell of weed was wafting towards them.

It’s probably a less objectionable smell, less harmful to health, and much more short-lived, than the smoke from a barbecue.

Would they recognise the smell? Mine wouldn't, it's just one of a great many smells one catches an occasional whiff of whilst out and about. No need to make a song and dance about what it is.

If it's a health related thing, ask yourself if you feel the same about bonfires, cigarettes, vapes, barbecues and gas stoves - all of which are considered by some authorities to be injurious to health. If the weed smoker is far enough away (e.g. in their own garden) I fail to see how even passive smoking could be a health concern.
