Neighbours bbq smoke going in garden?

amiamona · 25/06/2026 19:28

So my neighbour has been having food cooked on one of those portable plate/stove things.

The smoke literally goes straight into my back garden leaning me unable to open my windows or sit in the garden.

She also has her music on quite loud (someone else complained about her in our street).

She has it right next to our shared fence.
Her end terrace is the last house before it is split by an alleyway so she could have it on that side but I guess it would be tricky as her garden gate is on that side.

Idk if I'm moaning because I am hot and have 2 young kids screaming or if this would genuinely bother others?

The noise/music would annoy me more than the smell. If the smoke's that bad you need to say something.

Or get the sprinkler out.....

amiamona · 25/06/2026 19:32

The music does annoy me and we are actively looking to move asap.

When I see her her I will ask her nicely if she could move it away.

The noise would annoy me. The smoke doesn't last long at a BBQ ever.

DozyCrow · 25/06/2026 19:35

Could she be having her music loud to drown out the sound of your kids screaming?

amiamona · 25/06/2026 19:36

No she also has a young toddler who screams non stop.

In afraid this is part of having neighbours. If it is not a regular occurrence you put up with it.

amiamona · 25/06/2026 20:14

Is it worth reporting?

Is it worth reporting?

To who? It's not against any rules to BBQ in your garden and you can't control the smoke. It's annoying, sure, but nothing you can do.

Shelleyblueeyes · 25/06/2026 20:29

amiamona · 25/06/2026 20:14

Is it worth reporting?

No.
You can ask her politely to be more neighbourly but that's it.

Goldengirl123 · 25/06/2026 22:43

I don’t suppose she appreciates your kids screaming

ChloeCannotCanCan · 25/06/2026 23:32

Reporting to who? The bbq police?

It’s just part of living near other people, you will do things which irritate them, this is pretty minor!

amiamona · 25/06/2026 23:43

But she has the loud music on from 4:30pm - 9pm.

OnlyReplyToIdiots · 25/06/2026 23:51

Please do report them for using their own garden in a heatwave, and report back how you got on…

ConstantlyFuriosa · 26/06/2026 03:22

The music is out of order. You’ll probably get people saying she can do what she wants as long as it’s after 7am and before 11pm but this isn’t quite true if she’s doing it consistently every day and it’s having an adverse effect on your own ‘quiet enjoyment of your property’. What she’s doing is unreasonable and could be reported but I’m not sure to whom, because environmental heath services don’t seem to exist any more (not in my town anyway) and unless she’s a HA tenant then you’d have to find her landlord who probably wouldn’t care.

As for the barbecue I really hate them since I’ve lived in a built up area with so many neighbours using them on boiling hot days when I need fresh air. But I really don’t think there’s anything to be done about that.

Wtafdidido · 26/06/2026 03:32

How loud is the music actually? Is it just annoying to you or actually outwith Council noise limits? She is not unreasonable about her times and well withing the rules for turning it off. I get it is irritating if music is not your thing. As for the bbq nothing you can do. Why not get one of your own? Unfortunately it’s all part and parcel of British summertime especially if you live in a row of terraces. A minor irritation really and it could be so much worse

amiamona · 26/06/2026 08:37

I have reported her for the music to the council - we are both council tenants.

Its every day now.

If you’re considering moving , you would have to state a dispute between yourselves and that would put buyers off .

amiamona · 26/06/2026 08:44

@bugalugs45 no we are both council tenants.

A whole row of houses has gone up because someone used a disposable BBQ !

A whole block of flats went up because someone used a fridge. What's that got to do with anything?

People are allowed to enjoy their gardens. People are allowed to cook food, and talk, and listen to music and use their own garden.

If you can't enjoy yourself while other people enjoy themselves then that's a you problem and you need to go live in a field somewhere, Christ on one of my FB groups someone is complaining because they live in a field and they can hear cows. It's honestly bonkers all these people wanting to use their garden now the weather's nice and realising they're not the only people (or animals) in the world and being pissed about it.

WolfinSheepsDress · 26/06/2026 09:10

@Esmeraldathe3rd we have to be considerate to our neighbours .
Id love to have loud music and fire pits and so on bit that would make my neighbours lives very hard.
I have head phones instead and when we have a BBQ it's right down the bottom of a long garden and we have fire safety in mind in heat.
All this shows are are aware of impact and risk
Ops neighbour does not

amiamona · 26/06/2026 09:19

@WolfinSheepsDress
Where was this? That's scary.

She uses a portable plate thing not an actual BBQ.

OP posts:
amiamona · 26/06/2026 09:21

@WolfinSheepsDressYes she is awful and selfish.
Instead of moving the bbq thing down the garden she has it right next to my kitchen door and windows.

She also has het boyfriend living there whilst also claiming so that will be reported as well.
