AIBU to feel boxed in when trying to change career direction

It’s frustrating how difficult it is to move into a slightly different role even when you know you have the right skills.

I get so frustrated. Every role wants someone who has done exactly that before, and if you want to side step / move out of what you are doing it is made impossible by the tight criterion, and now also AI scanning CVs to see how many keywords are matched so your CV may never be seen by a human.

I feel like there used to be more acceptance that you may have the skills and be able to do the job, without necessarily having done the exact job in question for years before. I feel boxed in, and penalised for once going down a career path I realised I don't want, and now stuck in it.

I know what you mean. I find that if I really highlight my transferable skills, I will progress to the interview only for them to say I haven't got the relevant experience and other candidates were more suited.

I don't know what the answer is sorry. Can you volunteer in this role / build a portfolio?
