WWYD? Colonoscopy- Will I poop my pants?

I'm going in for a colonoscopy next week and have a morning appointment at 9am. Instructions say take first dose (Plenvu) at 6pm and second dose at 5am on the morning of the appointment. I'm just worried that the 5am dose is too late as I’ll be travelling to the hospital at 7.45am!

Previous colonoscopies (with Moviprep) have advised first dose at 4pm and second dose at 8pm.

Does anyone know if it would it be ok to do these 4pm and 8pm timings with Plenvu? I can't get through to the hospital to ask!

YABU: Stick to the timings they have given- you won’t poop your pants on the way there!

YANBU: It will be fine to change the timing to 4pm and 8pm

I had a colonoscopy 3 weeks ago so unfortunately the experience is still very raw in my mind!
I found the doses took around 30-45 minutes to kick in and the diarrhoea lasted around 15 minutes before I was cleared out… I think you’ll be fine.

get some tena lady pants with heavy flow to give you some piece of mind. The bowel movement will be very very watery by then

KatiePricesKnickers · 23/06/2026 18:12

Take them early. Once it’s out, it’s out.
better early than late.

Wonderknicks · 23/06/2026 18:15

They will have timed it to work with your appointment time. Either go as try say or call them & ask if it matters if you change the timing. I think you'll be thoroughly cleared out by then (voice of experience!)

lol at the tena lady pants but probably a good idea! Pooping my pants is my worst nightmare!

I can't remember the exact timings of mine but I was worried about leaks and wore TENA pants to the hospital. I didn't want to risk a cab as DH was busy that day so I drove to the hospital and DH got a cab there when I coukd come home and drove me home. I'd have been perfectly fine to have come home alone in a cab but they wpuldn't allow it.

DB drove himself home afterwards - he didn't not have any sedation or gas and was very matter of fact about the whole thing. I don't think I would be.

I shit myself in my hall on the way to the toilet when I had mine 🤣

As PP mentioned though it he actually diarrhoea part doesn’t last very long when it starts and when you’re empty there’s nothing else to come out as long as you haven’t eaten.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 23/06/2026 19:41

Ok, been there, fretted about that! I had exactly the same schedule, evening before then 5am, but my previous experience was that things were very liquid way into the morning, so I looked online at the advice given by other hospitals. About half said evening/morning (for a morning colonoscopy), but many others did both doses the day before, so second dose just before bed. Although this was guaranteed and up and down night that sounded far better than loose bowels at the colonoscopy, so I did that. Well, I got a proper telling off because I hadn't followed instructions. They said the problem was that anything in the bowel would start to solidify and the colonoscopy wouldn't be able to be done. They agreed to try "as I was there" and it was all fine, no problem at all. However, the one thing they did tell me, which they hadn't bothered to put in any of the information, was that when they do the procedure they can suck out any liquid shit fluid, so it's not a problem if the bowel isn't empty.

So there you go. Not sure how helpful that is but it might help!

Edited to add, if offered, take the sedation, it's the best bit!

Sorry but your post made me 😂 .
My DH has recently had two colonoscopies (they got an incomplete picture on the first)
He'd not followed the bland diet properly on the first occasion.
All good with him .
He had to be a couple of steps from the toilet as the urgency is unreal.

TheyGrewUp · 23/06/2026 20:23

I started the white/clear diet a day earlier than the instructions and I think that helped. I had a drink called picolax which was palatable and not too great in volume.

You have to laugh about these things or you’d cry 🤣

tinyspiny · 23/06/2026 20:30

If you follow the diet really strictly beforehand there is very little left for the prep to work on so I’d take the doses as recommended .

rachll · 23/06/2026 20:38

@Imlyingandthatsthetruth that is so helpful, thank you! I was hoping to get it all done the night before but it looks like I’ll have to follow the timings given and get some Tena Lady at the ready!

Same.
I had a morning procedure and plenvu. Was told to take one at 6pm and the second at 9pm.
Nothing happened until after the second dose and I was on the toilet pretty much three hours.
I bought some incontinence pants as recommended on a thread on here which made me feel a little more secure.

igelkott2026 · 23/06/2026 20:45

I started mine earlier than they said the night before and I needed the second dose before I got going and it took hours (though I got some sleep inbetween toilet visits). I didn't have an accident but I did need to go again when I got to the hospital.

Justwingingit2005 · 23/06/2026 21:02

I've had two colonoscopies.
Didn't have any accidents but do stay close to the toilet when it does kick in....

Oh and wet wipes or a bog roll in the fridge 🤣

lovemelongtime · 23/06/2026 21:21

I was so paranoid I chat GPT'd to death. Literally asking so many questions about timings, shitting myself, pain etc and it was like asking about very good knowledgeable friend who doesn't mind if you ask three million questions. Put my mind at ease and no I didn't poo in the car

LittleRobins · 23/06/2026 21:24

I’ve had three and followed the instructions and been fine, I also have a long taxi ride to hospital to get there so was worried. As I’d had sedation I wasn’t allowed to leave the locked waiting room until my husband arrived to make sure I wouldn’t drive home. I absolutely needed the sedation, the pain varies for everyone. Some barely feel it, most say it’s uncomfortable but for me it was agony. But from that they managers to diagnose me with over-active nerves and put me on tablets to help.
