To be hiding from the sun?

Yesterday and today I’ve stayed indoors, curtains closed and fans on I am pregnant and have a 2 year old, I feel it’s sensible as she is like me and really struggles with the heat. My neighbours have been in the garden with their 2 toddlers all day with no shade, I feel quite dramatic that I’m hiding and others are so easily enjoying this weather, I couldn’t last 5 minutes in the garden in this heat and know my daughter couldn’t either.

I’m hiding too - sane thing to do IMO!

LuckyHazelFox · 23/06/2026 15:50

It's too unbearable to sit outside.

Livingthebestlife · 23/06/2026 15:50

Everyone's different, do what suits you. I'm in and out of the garden, I get bored easily although when abroad I never get bored doing anything in the sun. I've neighbours who live in the garden all year round and at first I thought that weird until she told me she thought the Irish were weird for not sitting in their gardens all day. I think the main thing is do what's comfortable whether it feels wrong or not.

LakieLady · 23/06/2026 15:50

YANBU!

It was 34.5 when I was in town earlier, and it's a couple of degrees cooler where I live. I've had the curtains and windows closed to keep the sun out and I bought a fan this morning, which means the living room is now at a perfectly comfortable 25 degrees.

Wingedharpy · 23/06/2026 15:52

I've got my miner's helmet on, indoors, so I can find my way round in the dark!
All blackout lined curtains and blinds are drawn firmly shut and I don't anticipate emerging for the rest of the week.
House is lovely and cool.

Honeyhonay · 23/06/2026 15:52

It’s your life and your choice.
We’re in the garden all day with the padding pool, lollies and general running around in the sun. My preschoolers love sunshine though.

backformoreofthesame · 23/06/2026 15:53

Health advice to avoid heat applies particularly to small children and elderly

whats wrong with enjoying keeping a little cooler ?

ConverselyAttired · 23/06/2026 15:56

My son's school is closed tomorrow and Thursday due to the heat (38 according to the met office). There is no way he's going out in our garden that has no shade. Mostly to be sensible as he has asthma, but also because I'm not slathering him in sun cream only for him to go out and say he is too hot after 3 minutes. If he is warm I will run him a cold bath.

Oohanothername · 23/06/2026 16:00

On a sunlounger, soaking up the sunshine! I wait all year for this, I can't imagine hiding from it! I'm gutted that I'm in an air conditioned office for the next two days.

Thats okay, everyone has different things that they enjoy, and this weather is only ‘enjoyable’ with you ‘missing out’ if you are one of those people.

I’m inside and having happy daydreams about autumn and having drinks of water.

Buy yay, autumn is coming! But I think it might be less hot in a few days.

squashyhat · 23/06/2026 16:04

I'm waiting for a tradie quote so currently in my cool living room watching the Eastbourne tennis. I'm not sure how much longer I can stand the music at changeover though - who on God's green earth thought that was a good idea?!

Applepe · 23/06/2026 16:04

Me, I’m hiding.

GisGasGus · 23/06/2026 16:06

Why would it be unreasonable not to like hot weather? It doesn't make you a better person if you can happily carry on as normal in either extreme heat or cold

Ponderingwindow · 23/06/2026 16:09

My husband and I stepped into the garden to look at something and within 2 minutes he pointed out my face was bright red and the skin on my nose was starting to look odd. It’s too sunny and too hot to be outside for some of us.

this vampire will emerge again when we have some proper gloom.

RareRubyRobin · 23/06/2026 16:10

You’re not dramatic you’re sensible. I don’t do anything over 25 as I just can’t cope so when my DS was little and it was super hot he used to play in the bath - he found it much more enjoyable than a paddling pool, which he always found too cold, or too filled with bugs, or too sunny and so on and so forth. He would spend ages playing in the tub though - happy days.

Shinyandnew1 · 23/06/2026 16:15

Why would that be dramatic? As long as you aren’t broadcasting what you are doing over social media, who would know what you are doing?!

Sadless · 24/06/2026 12:25

It's been really quite around my area is morning thinking everyone has decided to stay indoors out of it. But now a neighbour with little kids are in the garden.

I honestly Dont know how they are out in it my garden gets full sun and I won't even go out the washing out .

LuckyHazelFox · 27/06/2026 13:12

Thank goodness today is giving a slight bit of respite. Roll on next week. This week has been bloody horrible.

TinyTempest · 27/06/2026 13:35

It's what thousands, if not millions of people do every Summer 🤷‍♂️

catslovehairties · 27/06/2026 15:02

YANBU, I've been inside until about 7pm when it cools down, then I go and sit in the garden for a couple of hours. It's far too hot and sticky for me - even today when it's supposed to have cooled down a bit.

NeedWineNow · 27/06/2026 15:28

Me and DH have been mostly indoors with the fan on or outside but tucked under the brolly. I have been enjoying putting the washing out and getting it dry in a nanosecond, but it's too hot for me to sit outside without shade. Amazing as me and DH head off to Greece at the end of August and lay out in heat like this no problem. I suppose the difference abroad is that we are by the sea or a pool and can jump in for a cooling dip, whereas in our garden I've only got a large bucket to fill up and put my feet in!

Dance classes in our village hall have been very unpleasant for the last two evenings I have to say.

Trainup · 27/06/2026 15:31

I’m inside.. my kids need a break from the sun. The heat and suncream from being at school the last few days has flared their eczema

dudsville · 27/06/2026 15:32

Absolutely, I don't have to be out there, so I'm not going. It isn't dramatic, it's just a choice.

PositiveLife · 27/06/2026 15:53

I'm hiding too. I'm not good in the heat but this week my hayfever has been really really bad too. So I'm sat inside with windows and curtains closed. Eating ice lollies cos it's still too hot inside!
