Businesses using AI to design posters - just why??

Pleasedontdothat · Today 14:13

Why do businesses think that using AI to design posters or signs is a good idea? My instant reaction is never to use that particular business again and I’m sure I can’t be alone. All the posters/signs I’ve seen recently all look the same - there’s too much going on and for some bizarre reason they’re mostly swirly shades of brown. Yes I realise it’s quick, easy and cheap to do but surely it can’t be worth it if you run the risk of alienating at least some of your customers?

I agree OP but I’ve seen it used a lot by small businesses, community and charity events. All these groups need to keep costs low and AI is free.

Using AI isn’t great for engagement when it comes to brand & marketing or making your event or advert stand out.

I'm assuming they don't think it will matter, really—either that people won't notice that it's AI or simply won't care. If a business is offering a service I need at a fair price and seems to be reputable, I don't think it matters to me whether their ads are AI-generated or not.

That said, as someone who uses AI for work, I do find it off-putting when I'm browsing the Internet in relation to a hobby or something outside of work and find a page that is clearly pure AI-generated text. I tend to look for a different source, though I don't object to AI text when I intentionally go to AI for answers.

It's possible to use AI and not come up with something that looks or sounds exactly the same as everything else, but that takes more time and effort, as well as an awareness of what the current obvious AI look or sound is, so you can avoid it.

It's cheap and quick. That's why.

So what if actual designers lose their careers as long as the businesses save money. They can retrain in cyber

WonsWoo · Today 14:32

Slight aside but I was in a garden centre this morning, you know the kind that sells everything. Housewares, clothes, pet stuff.

They usually have a reasonable selection of nice prints by independent artists but that whole section is now AI generated images of pets in hats or pets dressed as chefs/in a work uniform or pets doing something human. So depressing.

AbsoluteHoot · Today 14:34

I agree AI being used for promotional material is everywhere. But I can’t see the harm. It’s free, and does the job.

Apart from the loss of designers careers?

One business in our area is a children's art club, to promote creativity and inspire imagination. The poster is obviously AI.

Gatekeeper · Today 14:36

It removes all individuality from a poster and I really dislike it when it's advertising food for the business. I want to see their actual cakes, meat, pies etc not some made up AI slop

Tableforjoan · Today 14:39

I don’t mind Ai posters unless say it’s fake food pictures being used.

A lot of small events use it as it’s fast and easy. Also a lot of caravan owners are using it for simple ads of their caravans for a sudden availability.

Most of these people wouldn’t be paying a company to make the poster instead they would just be making it themselves.

This is part of technology taking jobs in some cases much like self service checkouts, scan and shop, pay at pump and so on. Now it’s the Arts.

I was browsing birthday cards online and images that would have once been photography of animals were AI, I don’t like it either.

I work in the creative industry soI am not the biggest fan of AI, but I can't blame these small businesses for using it, most wouldnt have been able to hire a designer anyway, it gets them quick, easy free promo material in a tough economy for lots of small businesses. Some people will be like urgh AI but for 99% its not going to put them off shopping at a place.

Heatherchandler2 · Today 14:47

It makes everything blur into one. There's four community events this weekend with identical posters.

There's a few businesses near us that ai tweak their photos alot. It just looks shady as hell. I tried to explain to one of them that you are putting a lot of faith that people won't assume its all fake. Somehow you are meant to know that 50% of the decorations, the people in it are fake but the building itself is actually really nice and not fake.

I once went to a restaurant in Budapest where every dish on the menu was illustrated with AI (the menu proudly declared this to be so, but it would have been obvious even without the declaration). It was very off-putting. We made our excuses and left without ordering.

Brokedownpalace · Today 14:50

I'm a designer and don't blame small businesses for using it, however some are pretty bad, there is one for the local school fete up the road from me and the date is so small you can barely see it!

islingtontrial · Today 14:51

This has been annoying me too! For some reason the AI pictures give me the ick. There are quite a few that come up on my social media and I always hide them.

Niftywigglesheep · Today 14:57

I keep seeing this OP- all exactly the same! I don’t read them as my brain tells me it’s not real and repetitive. Same cartoon design and writing style and often too much info
