To just be sitting down to dinner now?

I know I can do what I like, but surely I’m not the only one who sometimes eats this late?

My friend and I were talking and I mentioned I was about to sit down with dinner and watch the Scotland game. She thinks I am being very unreasonable and that it’s extremely unhealthy and ‘just wrong’.

AIBU? Is this bad for you?

I often eat late. Years of shifting work have ruined my body clock. It's fine!

jellyfish798 · 19/06/2026 22:51

I'm literally about to do this after finishing a late shift. I don't like a big meal during work and settle down to din whenever suits me with my shift pattern. I'd tell her to sod off 😆

Do what works for you! I don’t like to eat after 6pm but I take meds for my thyroid at bedtime and they need to be on a reasonably empty stomach.

Before I read your post I thought - if you are watching Scotland good on you.
Enjoy yourself - and good luck Scotland

JustGiveMeReason · 19/06/2026 23:05

I don't think it is ideal, but, as pps have said, if your shifts dictate that you don't get to eat at more 'usual times' , then you just have to crack on.

PuppyMonkey · 19/06/2026 23:13

It’s giving me heartburn just thinking about eating after 7pm but I know we’re all different. Just curious - were you not at all hungry until now? Confused

LilacDrift · 19/06/2026 23:15

I'd be staving if I ate this late. Plus who can be arsed to cook this late?

TheChosenTwo · 19/06/2026 23:23

We usually eat our evening meal between 8-9. Tonight we had it at 10, we had been doing stuff after work/school (nice stuff!), ds had a suitable small meal/large snack when he gets home (toast, fruit, biscuits, crisps!) and then it was just such a lovely evening, didn’t get the bbq fired up until late, ds and I were sitting in the garden playing a few games while dh cooked.

Duvetdayforme · 20/06/2026 06:58

I couldn’t, it would really upset my digestive system and I would struggle to sleep.

However, if it works for you, crack on.

Zanatdy · 20/06/2026 07:09

Oh god I could not eat that late. My friend was only eating her dinner at 10.30pm last night because she was busy collecting kids etc, but can’t imagine it on a regular basis. I am an early eater, i’ve always eaten by 6pm. I get up at 5am or earlier, so eat an early breakfast, and early lunch. Do you go from lunch to 10.40 without eating?

PurpleCoo · 20/06/2026 07:14

Maybe not as late as you, but when it's this hot I can't eat until it cools down. Maybe on Tuesday when it's going to be 35c I will be eating at the same time.

When I was in Singapore, I couldn't eat until nearly midnight and even then I was forcing myself... It was just far too hot.

It wouldn't be healthy if you did it all the time, but in response to the extreme heat and of you are up watching the football anyway, I don't see the harm.

It's definitely not unreasonable!

HighHeelsRedLips · 20/06/2026 07:26

If that suits you then that’s fine. Friend can have an opinion but it’s up to you when you eat. Personally I couldn’t eat that late as I couldn’t be bothered with food prep, cooking and washing up afterwards.

Elsvieta · 21/06/2026 16:11

"Unreasonable"? Towards who? Unless you forgot to mention you were also feeding your six year old at that time or something.

Tell her to go to Madrid sometime - perfectly normal to see hordes of people eating in restaurants at midnight.

No, I don’t bother with breakfast then have lunch at about 2:30. After work I go to an exercise class and don’t get home till around 6:30, and often have to call in at the shops afterwards, so by the time I get home, tidy up, shower and start cooking it’s regularly after 10.

I had a slice of sourdough and peanut butter after getting home. 10:40 is on the later side of ususual.
