See your GP!

is it fungal? it might be because it’s not getting dried enough after bathing. dry well, you could even use a hairdryer if needs be! put a blob of caneston in for a few days and see if it helps.

Polyester clothes and drinking baileys at Christmas did this to me! No idea why re the baileys! If it’s monthly and you are a woman, could it be related to hormones? Same time each month?

ismiledather · 19/06/2026 21:22

You sure it’s infection not sweat/moisture getting trapped and causing redness and stinging?

if it’s what I described washing and drying carefully a couple of times a day sorts it out.

Has your GP ruled out inverse psoriasis? It can present like a fungal infection and belly button's a common area for it to occur.

Any other skin, nail or joint changes?

Good clean then some hibiscrub

Once you have treated the fungal infection tuck a clean cotton wall ball into your BB every morning after your shower if it is a deep innie (the 'walls' can collapse) This will keep it dry and stop intertrigo.

Do you wear a belt?

Imupforthat · 19/06/2026 23:23

I’ve had this a couple of times. Weirdly, always seems to be when we’re camping.

As you say it’s surprisingly painful. No advice on recurrence but I am terrified of seeing the GP in case they take one look at me and go “ye gads woman! You have mere moments left on this mortal coil”. So in desperation I found a home remedy - making a paste of coconut oil and turmeric. Cleared it right up on each occasion.

I have a very belly button that’s hard to dry after a shower. When it gets minging, usually in the summer if my waistband has been sitting over it I drip tea tree oil into it, then geniuses cotton bud to spread it around.

Yes, had them month after month in a row after I started HRT. No idea if connected.

you can buy anti fungal powder. Whenever you get washed and dried you can apply the powder in the area and it keeps it dry and prevents any nasties building up in that area. It’s basically like athletes foot, warm damp areas of the body are breeding grounds for fungal infections. Daktarin (miconazole) powder or similar works a treat for my patients
