To ask you to keep the people of Makerfield in your thoughts today

AIBU ro also you all lightheartedly to keep us people of 'Makerfield' in your thoughts today. Today is the day that the deluge of campaign material coming through our letter boxes daily, the endless knocks on the door, and the not being able to run to Galloways to get a pie for dinner without being ambushed by some random reporter, should hopefully end.

We can hardly get them out of our thoughts when the dreadful Andy Burnam fiasco is in our face every day. Heaven help us all if he becomes PM. Even KS is looking a lot better compared to him. The people of Makerfield are being used for somebody's political ambition. Not on.

LovingTelescopes · 18/06/2026 11:16

I think Snake Burnham will be handed the seat.

If that's the case, I hope Sir Keir calls a General Election immediately.

If he wins it, he is secure for another four years and Burnham is left to wither on the back benches. If he loses, he will have the satisfaction of knowing that the most Burnham can hope for is leader of the Opposition, if he's lucky!

A General Election is a win win for KS. So time to stop snivelling, begging and offering bribes and go for broke! Grow a spine and a pair of balls and fire back.

What’s your reasoning here for why Burnham would be worse, although I know you’re a keen contrarian here?

I can understand why people are wary of Andy Burnham he is certainly appears more focused on being PM now rather than politics

Starmer will not call a GE is isn't that foolish and I do not believe he is that egotistical either

BillyBalls · 18/06/2026 11:26

Let’s hope they make the right decision

Fuck me, no more general elections, please. At least not until 2029.

The "King of the North" who thinks we don't pay enough taxes?

If more spending, more borrowing and a bigger state were the answer, Britain would be thriving by now. It's not just Jon Snow who knows nothing...

Because he'll have all his leftie pals in the cabinet. Including Angela Rayner. So it'll be increased taxes and benefits showered out everywhere. , And Putin eyeing us up because we'll have no money for things like defence.

JimBobsWife · 18/06/2026 11:51

Andy Burnham is somehow riding high on his reputation as the king of the north when in fact the transformation of Manchester was already in train.

The media have covered this quite widely - leaders such as Richard Leese and Howard Bernstein helped create a long-term, pro-growth, pro-development approach based on transport, regeneration, investment, housing, devolution and strong city-region institutions well before Burnham took over.

I have doubts about his abilities to be PM. At the moment, it all seems to be vibes based. Whatever that means.

I wish you all well.

If I lived there i would vote for anyone but AB.

He's going to be as present and useful to the people of the constituency as NF is to Clacton or wherever his seat is

If I had to find a reason for the troubles we find ourselves in it would be
a) professional politicians who want to rise in the party/government
b) political parties that mean our MPs are beholden to them (for re-election) rather than to us - the people they are elected to represent.

Almost all parties, for the last 30 years at least.

Feel bad for you all. You have a candidate that really has no interest in your constituency and is seeing this as a stepping stone to a bigger brighter career. That is awful to know that, really, none of you truly matter. And all the other candidates are about blocking him. This by-election should never have been allowed to run on these terms. But at least it is nearly over. Just hope the long-term consequences aren’t dire - for you or the rest of us!
