Some food cannot be poshed up, so stop trying - yes, I mean fish finger sandwiches

So many restaurants and cafes try to “posh up” the fish finger sandwich. They use goujons; they use battered fish not breaded; they use ciabatta or sourdough. They’re always lacklustre at best, crap at worst.

A fish finger sandwich needs frozen orange breadcrumbed fish fingers and white sliced bread. It cannot be made fancy without losing the essential elements that are the foundation of its appeal.

I think it should be protected from tampering like Cornish pasties.

I had the most amazing fish finger sandwich in the pub/restaurant across from Downing Street. It had fish goujons and tartare sauce in it. I wouldn't call it 'posh' though.

FastnetLundyRockall · 17/06/2026 23:22

Slightly disagree, it’s the fishfinger to bready vehicle ratio that’s the crucial thing. Bread that’s too thick is the worst.

takealettermsjones · 17/06/2026 23:24

Yes 🤣 see also artisan mac and cheese. You can put truffle in it all you want, it's still just cheesy pasta.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 17/06/2026 23:30

I like it with thick white bread, good quality fish fingers, cheese and spaghetti hoops. It’s a bit messy to eat but delicious.

UniversityOfLife · 18/06/2026 00:36

@AlbertaGeorgia as you’ve said + ketchup. Can’t beat it! A pauper’s sandwich I grew up with. Bloody delicious!

HeddaGarbled · 18/06/2026 00:43

Nope, you’re wrong. Battered fishfingers are much much better than that soggy orange nothing-to-do-with-bread-so-I-don’t-know-why-it’s-called-breadcrumbs abomination.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 18/06/2026 01:13

Soft white bloomer, crisp battered goujons, tartare sauce and ketchup. 😋

InterestedDad37 · 18/06/2026 01:19

YANBU, but I'm afraid your fish finger sandwich recipe is flawed:
Brown sliced bread - toasted, 2 slices
Lightly butter (or whatever you use - mine is olive oil spread from Lidl)
Gently mush 4* fish fingers onto lower slice
Generous squish of Heinz salad cream
Second slice on top, cut into 2, eat with hot tea while watching the World Cup (or any other TV of your choosing). 😀

*not more, not fewer

mathanxiety · 18/06/2026 01:23

Fish finger sandwiches should be made with toasted white sliced pan, buttered, with normal orange fish fingers that are squirted with lemon juice. The breakfast of champions.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/06/2026 01:50

I like varieties on the fish finger sandwich theme. Happy with goujons and nicer varieties of bread, but also fish finger wraps are good.

Wouldn’t necessarily call any of it posh though!

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/06/2026 01:52

Cheap fish fingers, cheap bread, plastic cheese and tomato sauce. That's what I want.

PenelopeJoanSterling · 18/06/2026 01:56

it needs a sprinkle of truffles

sashh · 18/06/2026 07:43

I had an Indian housemate, the only thing she could cook was fishfinger sandwiches.

They featured salad of various types, chili sauce, mayo... basically what was in the fridge.

spicysalad · 18/06/2026 08:07

I had amazing fish finger tacos recently…

Bjorkdidit · 18/06/2026 08:13

I think it should be protected from tampering like Cornish pasties 😂

Fish fingers make great tacos. I quarter a big wrap into 4, cook 4 fish fingers and have with lettuce and whatever we have of guacamole, chilli or tartare sauce or garlic mayo.

Makes you realise how basic a lot of food served in restaurants/pubs/cafes really is. It's not cooking, it's assembly of ready made ingredients. I avoid paying restaurant prices for this sort of thing as much as possible because it can be made at home in no time with no effort or skill so will save my £££s for food that's actually worth paying for.

Is this the right place to post that occasionally I do fancy a ‘fish finger’ sandwich, but it has to be proper chunky fish fingers (I used to get them online from Tom the Fish when I was in the UK), a warm ciabatta roll, little bit of salted butter, tartare sauce on the bottom bit of the roll with some shredded iceberg and a few capers, and some tomato ketchup up on the top bit of the roll :)

Dannytwophones · 21/06/2026 11:01

I disagree. Love a posh fish finger sandwich. Also love a frozen fish finger sandwich in white sliced bread. Both are nice in their own way.

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 21/06/2026 19:22

Thick white bread, orange fish fingers, lurpak and salad cream.
I'm a bit precious about sandwiches though.. i hate poshed up sandwiches, i want sliced gammon and cheese with good bread and butter. Yesterday i had a delicious ordinary wholemeal sandwich with butter and local tomatoes. The bomb. Posh sandwiches these days taste like shit. Tuna sandwiches, mayo AND salad cream for tang, crispy lettuce and tomato. That's it. I am a foodie, i cook lots but i hate overcomplicated food in shops and restaurants that just is not good!

StonwEd · 21/06/2026 20:08

Omg they can be poshed up beautifully! I like really nice bread, fish goujons, a seafood sauce (mayo and ketchup and Worcester sauce), lemon all over it, crispy lettuce... aaaamazing

BravasPatatas · 21/06/2026 20:10

I love a posh fish finger sandwich

LibertyLily · 21/06/2026 20:21

We're having our version of fish finger sandwiches for dinner tomorrow night 😆

Lightly buttered ciabatta with battered haddock, rocket, dill sauce and a squeeze of lemon...yum!

I must be odd as, imo, frozen orange fish finger sandwiches (which I love, but only discovered as an adult) should be made with wholemeal bread, not white.
