Long before time there was things called books and librarys, and a thing called reading fever which is akin in someway to social media addiction but for when books were first released i believe it was , i guess my point is why are some news articles saying about omg how will people handle not having social media, but then why not just go back to books ? afterall society was not built with modern internet

I’m not worried about the lack of social media, I don’t think it’s needed for children. But I am a parent and I can decide that for my own kids

This is also a sneaky back way in for digital ID

There are still tv/ cartoons/ movies. No need to resort to books and libraries.

Meanwhile, the Russians are firing warning shots at British civilians ships. Priorities arse about face Starmer and his makeshift half a job schemes.

FeelingSadToday1 · 16/06/2026 17:26

Tonight my son has cut the grass with scissors and played football in the garden (which he wouldn’t normally do). He’s almost 8 and his addiction was YouTube. It’s been blocked from yesterday and so far he’s not moaned too much! I think it’s fabulous the younger generations won’t have their childhoods ruined by social media and screen time

How did a 7 year old get addicted to YouTube ?

UnPetitDunPetit · 16/06/2026 17:29

Judging from your OP you appear to have been immunised against reading fever...

@FeelingSadToday1no offence to you but that is your fault as a parent and it shouldn't of been the government's decision to ban social media for you to remove it from your child.
Because of that style of parenting, everyone is going to have to give over their details to use social media.

Digital ID by the back door here.

What’s with the ‘omg’ then?

thats how some news articles have used different terms and other sites and i needed to choose a suitable term or word to convey the meaning

You are obviously a very responsible parent. Some children's parents are irresponsible. Should these children suffer?

Sirzy · 16/06/2026 17:38

Social media use has got out of control overall. So many people of all ages are now addicted to their phones and spend way too much time using it (I know I’m guilty and I’m making effort to change it)

for young people it poses a whole additional level of risk and one many aren’t mature enough to handle yet. The ban isn’t ideal of course it isn’t but it’s a step in the right direction to helping get some control of the issue

It affects your point because it makes your sentences harder to read. What does it even mean if someone is “omg”?

What’s with the ‘omg’ then?

I'm 47, very responsible and I LOVE a good omg occasionally.

It conveys everything I want to say in three letters.

And it can be used for so much - it's a literary eye roll, a sigh, a 'not this shit again'.

Try it.

CokeinBottles · 16/06/2026 17:41

SM is literally designed to be addictive. It's not really comparable to books.

I'm an adult, but I don't have a passport (ie digital id), so I won't be able to have social media after the restrictions are implemented. Except for the labour approved exempt ones of course (which no normal person uses or has ever heard of before).

Several clubs/sports groups that I'm a member of organise themselves entirely through Facebook - their weekly events are setup on there and members have to respond to say whether they're attending that week. So if the clubs don't change their booking in method I won't be able to do that either.

Many parents make poor choices despite overwhelming evidence about the harm that social media can cause to children and young people. It's never their child until it is... The consequences are then borne by everyone else, whether through antisocial behaviour, increased pressure on schools, healthcare services or wider society.
