AIBU to ignore a late delivery after cancelling the order?

DH ordered a large, heavy item online. He cancelled the order on the website but it appears to have been dispatched anyway. He got a notification from a delivery company (not one of the big ones, and has terrible reviews online) saying that it would be delivered between 8.45 and 10.45pm. Item has yet to arrive.

Are we being unreasonable to go to bed and ignore if delivery person knocks now? DH says that it’s totally reasonable to refuse delivery (by ignoring) as he cancelled the item and it’s way too late to deliver anything, especially something heavy which would need carrying around the back of the house (possibly causing noise). I feel bad for the poor person who has probably been driving around all day, working for a shitty company, and will be lumbered with a large item to have to attempt to re-deliver.

YABU - yes, ignore the delivery
YANBU - you should accept it if you’re awake

Why wouldn't you contact the delivery company to tell them the order has been cancelled? Save everyone a lot of hassle.

Go to bed.

A while ago I ordered a large appliance, then later that day saw a better deal and phoned to cancel - they said it was too late, already dispatched, but just to refuse to take delivery when it arrived. Which I did, and told the delivery driver that's what the shop had told me to do.

Edited to add: I wouldn't ignore the delivery, as they will make repeat attempts, and it's not fair on the driver.

No you don't ignore. Tell the driver sorry but you cancelled, they'll re-attempt otherwise.

Leave a note for driver

So, what did you do?

in theory yes but have you ever tried contacting a delivery company?. Its near impossible cancelling an order as nearly all use AI bots as customer service these days. Just leave a note on the door saying delivery refused as order cancelled. Your contract of sale is with the retailer you bought item from not the courier company. They should be the ones liaising with the delivery firm not the customer anyway. Phone the retailer in the morning reiterating you cancelled and when the item is returned back to them check they have refunded you.
