AIBU for wondering if a new build estate was social housing?

It was my ds’s birthday so we had a day out at the zoo with afew of his friends. I was dropping off one of the children, who happens to live in a new build estate in a neighbouring town. The estate seemed nice as first glance then I saw an old sofa sitting in one of the front gardens. I turned to DH and said ‘I was wondering to myself if this is all housing association property and then I saw that sofa sitting in the garden’. He scoffed. I felt like a terrible snob afterwards.

Why does a sofa in the garden = social housing?

MyPinkOtter · 14/06/2026 21:24

I mean, most new-build housing estates will have a mix of social housing and private ownership right?

The juxtaposition in your post between ‘nice’ estate and one with social housing does make you sound like a snob, yes.

MajorSamanthaCarter · 14/06/2026 21:25

You really can't think of any reason why someone would have an old sofa outside other than 'must be social housing'?

Maybe it’s the day the council collect large items tomorrow? But yes you’re a complete snob.

I own my own home and I have had furniture out the front multiple times waiting for the council to pick it up. All new estates will have some social housing in it

Christ. You sound like my mother. She was obsessed with 'cars on bricks' on 'council estates'. I thought this kind of insidious snottiness went out in the 90s.

Needmorelego · 14/06/2026 21:31

To be honest if an entire new build estate was "social housing" I'd be over the moon.
It's exactly what we need in the UK.

I dunno… looked like it had been there a while..

So just a few friends invited to the party and one lives in a neighbouring town - and you’re now wondering if it’s social housing?

Give over - you just made that up!

HoskinsChoice · 14/06/2026 23:13

This story is definitely true.

If it's like my council it's a minimum 3 week wait to collect bulky refuse.

But I don't see the connection between the sofa and social housing
