To not understand the fuss about air fryers?

People keep raving about them and I got one as a present and I used it a couple of times and gave up on it. It doesn’t cook food any quicker than a normal cooker.

I’ve tried again today and I’ve now been waiting an hour for a baked potato to cook. Would’ve been done by now in the oven. What is the point? What am I missing?

It is just a small oven. It is far more energy efficient because you are heating a smaller space and it is quicker to heat up, and stay heated up. So if your standard oven takes 10 or 15 minutes to heat up to the 180c or whatever, the air fryer is there in 2 minutes.

You may perceive that it is not quicker but you are objectively wrong. Air fryers are 20% quicker than a conventional oven. https://www.arlafoods.co.uk/recipes/articles/air-fryer-conversion-chart/ Also much cheaper to run. https://energysavingtrust.org.uk/air-fryer-oven-microwave-hob-slow-cooker-cheaper-cooking/ Which is something to consider if you have teenagers like mine who would think nothing of having the oven on for 40 minutes to cook a single steak bake.

It does not cook my food quicker. I never wait for my oven to warm up, I just push the food in. It takes 20 minutes to cook fish fingers or 45 for a jacket potato from cold in the oven. The air fryer took 45 minutes for the fish fingers and 1hr5 for the jacket potato. I’ve had two different models and neither cooked food quicker.

I made haddock fillet with asparagus and roast Mediterranean vegetables in 15 minutes for my lunch.

it was healthy, delicious and fast.

singthing · 13/06/2026 19:24

Missing the point a bit but unless its pastry or similar, I never preheat the oven anymore. Just turn it on and whack it in.

I also do not have an airfryer. It would probably suit me very well but they are cumbersome, bulky gadgets and I don't have much countertop space. Also very ugly things.

And finally I don't want to turn into one of those born again airfryer people who rave about them all the time 😆

Me too. Whack the oven up to the highest temperature and shove the food in. No waiting for it to warm up.

It’s got a temperature dial and a timer. Perhaps some people would need an instruction booklet to wrap their heads around that but I would assume their parents are cooking their meals for them.

Well if your parents are not cooking for you it can only mean you've got a dodgy air fryer that's not working properly.

I love my air fryer especially after upgrading to the Ninja double drawer, for a jacket potato 8 mins in microwave and 8 mins in the air fryer gives me a perfect one.

For me the money saving aspect is a no brainer, I have a range cooker which is fantastic but expensive compared to the air fryer, my smart meter is in the kitchen and you can see the difference which each appliance is used.

If it doesn't work for you it doesn't work, you don't have to keep using it.

You’re doing something wrong if fish fingers are taking 45 minutes in the air fryer. Ours would be cremated if they were left any more than 10 in our (perfectly standard) air fryer.

SolveMyPrombles · 13/06/2026 19:28

It's awesome! Saves loads on electricity, more evenly cooks things e.g. chicken, bacon. Easier to check on stuff. Transparent count down. Bloody love ours!

I set the temperature gauge on the top to 200 (the highest) and turn the timer to 20 minutes, as per the instructions. Then they’re not cooked and I have to set it away for another 20 minutes.

Sounds like you are using it incorrectly if it’s taking that long to cook food.

Each to their own but they must be pretty crappy air fryer if it takes 45 minutes to cook fish fingers! At 200 degrees mine does them in 12

Not at all. But when people post total mince about fish fingers taking 45 minutes in an air fryer that needs to be challenged.

We use both conventional oven and air fryer. They are both tools, both have their uses. It's fine to say "I don't like an air fryer" and that's fine, your opinion, use it or don't use it, nobody cares.

PinkyFlamingo · 13/06/2026 19:33

I love mine especially since my autistic teenager can cook in it, I would never let him near my oven! 😂

You’re definitely doing something wrong there, or your air fryer is broken. Birdseye fish fingers have the instructions on the back- 8 minutes in the air fryer from frozen.

God knows what you were doing for 45, that’s twice as long as a couple of chicken breasts or drumsticks would take in our air fryer.

The rule for air fryers is that you cook it 20 degrees lower and for 20% less time than a conventional oven. I’ve always followed that and very rarely had to put it back in for extra time.

It should not take 45 mins too cook fish fingers.

Then there's something massively wrong with your air fryer or you don't know how to use it.

My ninja cooks that sort of stuff in about 10 mins. Definitely not emperor's new clothes. I guess all air fryers aren't the same.

TrixieFatell · 13/06/2026 19:39

Are you turning it on?

45 mins for fish fingers is crazy, we can do a whole chicken in that time.

TheDenimPoet · 13/06/2026 19:39

If it's not quicker than an oven, it's either a shit one, or you're not using it right.

MaryBeardsShoes · 13/06/2026 19:40

What on Earth do you mean it’s not as quick? Ours is much quicker. For a start you don’t have to wait for it to warm up. It sounds like you’re not using it correctly!
