Offspring (early 20s)has just arrived back from a month in SE Asia.
He's had a brilliant time. Really!
How soon should he head to the GUM clinic? Silly arse came back with the same amount of condoms that he went with.
No idea of incubation times of the usual STIs.
Yes, I've lectured him, told him he's daft and irresponsible, etc. He admitted he's been ridiculous.

ASAP😜

Blimms · 10/06/2026 22:03

Do you mean that he has told you he has had unprotected sex?

Latenightreader · 10/06/2026 22:03

You counted his condoms?

Blimms · 10/06/2026 22:05

This sounds a little off, OP.

Wecandothisasalways · 10/06/2026 22:08

I have a pretty relaxed relationship with my sons but I certainly wouldn’t be counting their condoms !

TooManyAardvarks · 10/06/2026 22:10

Oh good grief, I didnt count his sodding condoms 😆 he volunteered the info that yes, he'd had unprotected sex.
Bloody idiot!

To answer your question @TooMany:

Window periods for STIs (ie. the time between acquiring the infection and the test reliably showing positive for it) are as follows:

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea - 2 weeks
HIV - 4-6 weeks
Syphilis and hepatitis B - 3 months
Hepatitis C - up to 6 months

These are the screening tests which are generally done in a GU clinic for people with no symptoms, although hepatitis is only included in certain scenarios. So he could test now, but repeat tests when out of the window periods for specific infections; it depends on the timing of any sex he had. It’s possible to do home test kits for screening. If he has any genital symptoms though, he should visit a clinic for advice and probably an examination.

How do you know how many condoms an adult man has? It’s a bit creepy.

let him live his life.

Thank you, that was the sort of info I was looking for.
Not people going on about counting condoms!
He had the Hep B jab a wee while ago for work purposes, so should be covered for that.
I'll suggest he gets checked out in a month or so.

Did he have sex with other young tourists or with sex workers? Neither is great, but the former probably less risky than the latter. But why the F didn't he use the condoms that were In His Bag

Other young travellers. No sex workers.
Believe me, he knows I'm unimpressed at the risk he's put himself in and also the young women who he's 'made friends' with!

Stupid

If he’s old enough to trot around the world having unprotected sex with strangers, OP, he’s old enough to Google this information for himself

Pregnancy tests about 4 weeks…. Hopefully he’s still ‘friend’ on SM and you don’t need to start knitting…

Decacaffeinatednow · 10/06/2026 23:04

How many grandchildren might you be hearing about in early 2027 @TooManyAardvarks

He can travel to Asia but not google a simple question?
Let him handle it. He is an adult.
