AIBU to think customers’ behaviour about evacuating in the heavy rain was childish

I visited my local supermarket this morning. It was dry at the time. The supermarket’s fire alarms were going off, when the thunder and lightning happened along with torrential downpours.

Some customers were being difficult to evacuate the store as it was raining! Guessing that from those who moaned at the staff and security were the older side.

How pathetic did these customers sounded?

The fire assembly point is not under cover.

Aren't most buildings meant to have at least one drill every 6 months (recommended) or at least (legally) 1 x per year. I used to be a fire warden and we got told off once in an old building I was a receptionist for as my froend left her toast in the toaster and nearly burned the building down ...this was a long time ago though?

Its company policy in most bingo places, in theory it keeps things calm and prevents panic but ime there were some patrons muttering that it was shocking to carry on but vast majority were very pragmatic, She’d of wanted us to carry on type stuff. It was a good 25 years ago and the demographic was largely chain smoking ( you could smoke at bingo halls back then) ladies over pension age.

Wait till you hear what they do with people who die on flights ....

The company I work for do both planned and emergency maintenance works in the 3 largest supermarkets nationwide. You’d be surprised at just how idiotic many customers are! The will literally remove barriers, put there for their safety, venture into what is essentially a building site, so they can reach for a tin of beans. They will walk into closed customer toilets, removing chapter 8 barriers, and shit in toilets that haven’t even been plumbed in.

I really, really, really wouldn't actually.

Little tip: Never make a bet where you need the phrase "nobody could be that stupid" to win.

I have to admit I always just assumed they cover with a blanket and get in with it if a short flight.

I had to Google Chapter 8 barriers. I recognise them

I bet these are the same people who move road closed signs then drive into floods or a massive hole dug out.

Actually if these idiots slip, trip and fall - they won’t be able to claim compensation. As supermarket will save CCTV footage of them moving barriers etc

Also ask anyone who works or has worked in a shop with bathrooms displays. They will all say they have found an unplumbed toilet on display with a poo in it. More to the point, how could they get away from doing a poo with other people about?

Because they have been known to shove past our workmen, workmen have gone on lunch only to return and have been left with a present! The stories I get told are fascinating!

My friend worked for a supermarket and the store flooded. Customers wanted to buy their shopping and refused to move even though they were ankle deep in water.

Its not like the supermarket is the only place where food is sold

Actually, where I live, the supermarket often floods and IS the only place to buy food at a sensible price! But still, we all shop elsewhere for a couple of weeks every two or three years!

I don't think I'd be too thrilled about standing outside in heavy rain and a thunderstorm!

I meant doing a poo in one of the display loos you get in the likes of B&Q? A colleague's son works for B&Q and probably gets about the dummy toilets frequently. Never seen anyone do the act in the flesh but on CCTV.

I'm not surprised by the many depressing stories told here - though I'm shocked at the study showing most of the fatalities at Manchester Woolworths were those who stubbornly stayed in the cafeteria. It's one of those "How stupid can you be?" moments that remind you there's no limit to human idiocy.

So I shouldn't be surprised at so many PPs saying they wouldn't leave a building during a fire alarm or other emergency ... because they'd rather die in a fire than leave their shopping behind, their coffee unfinished or risk a lightning strike (!)

I believe the tutting, whinging is louder from older people. Younger people keep their comments to themselves

You're really invested in dumping on 'older people' aren't you. Wondering what age you are - physically that is - you're already demonstrating your mental maturity

Yes. I did made a passing comment to one bitch

I accept you maybe didn’t intend this thread as an opportunity for oldie bashing but as your grammar and punctuation is terrible I’ll happily bash that instead.
In addition, since when has it been acceptable to refer to anyone as “one bitch” in the way you have.
You are better at coping in a storm in the circumstances you’ve described but you lack skills in other ways. We are all different, maybe be kinder in future and less judgy!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/06/2026 21:26

Better than who? The scores aren't in.
Let the gods of evolution say who'll win.
Better at what? In what way?
Let the gods of evolution have their say.

Edited

I find your comments over my grammar offensive. I am dysleixic.

And anyone over about fifty may have found your comments about "older people" offensive.

It's your shirt now!

Okiedokie123 · 13/06/2026 21:40

@Loppp as I said, we all have different skills. Plenty pf what you’ve said is offensive about other people.
